Maeve's sleepy softness undid something in Andres. He leaned in and kissed her forehead.
She responded instantly, rising into his arms.
She needed something—anything—to shake her mind awake. Her instincts screamed that whatever she'd forgotten mattered.
One touch became two, and then there was no space left between them. The two of them moved like they couldn't get close enough, kissing as they stumbled together, hungry to burn off the tension that had been building for days.
And then, a thread of thought finally pierced Maeve's haze—like she'd grabbed hold of something real.
And in the next second, she made a mess of everything.
In the middle of kissing Andres, she shifted too hard and bumped into something.
A sharp crash rang out as the object hit the floor and rolled.
They both froze.
On the ground was the Puzzle Sphere—the one Remi had warned Maeve not to touch the day she moved into Azure Bay.
Andres reacted on instinct. He pushed Maeve back and immediately checked the sphere, as if afraid it had been damaged.
The thing was intricately made—one wrong impact could ruin it.
The naked concern on his face told Maeve more than any confession could.
"The person who gave you that Puzzle Sphere," Maeve said quietly. "Are they important to you?"
Andres stilled.
With Maeve looking at him so openly, lying felt impossible. "They used to be."
Maeve didn't bother dancing around it. "An ex?"
It was the first time either of them had brought up the subject so plainly—past relationships, old privacy.
Andres didn't want to leave a loose end that could come back to haunt him, so he nodded once, cleanly. "Yes."
Maeve smiled. "You don't have to be so cautious. Everyone has a past."
Andres wanted to explain—wanted to say more—but his phone rang again, as if determined to ruin his life.
"Hold on. I need to take this."
He was gone less than two minutes.
