Even though he'd tried to keep his voice down, she still caught a few key words.
Andres stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows, issuing orders to Hans on the other end of the line.
"You heard me. Starting today, pull every last dollar of our investment from Aethelburg University."
"And while you're at it, pass a message to Renfield Yates. Orca Group didn't make this call in a vacuum—his little public mouthpiece stunt had everything to do with it."
Andres hadn't expected that after one night's sleep, the smear campaign against Maeve would have metastasized across the internet.
Someone—on purpose—was fanning the flames, pushing a story that Maeve hadn't been punished for that killing back then because some high-ranking official in the justice system had been wrapped around her finger and quietly let her walk.
It was so ridiculous it would've been funny, if it wasn't destroying her.
Watching Maeve's reputation crater all over again, Andres refused to sit there and take it.
The first person he decided to make an example of was Renfield, the university provost who'd been loudly threatening to expel her.
Even the courts hadn't convicted Maeve. What right did Renfield have to make that call on his own?
Maeve gave a small yawn, her voice lazy and sleep-rough.
"Whitty, you don't need to blow up your relationship with Aethelburg University because of me."
She'd only caught the gist, but Andres had made his goal obvious enough.
Orca Group's presence at Aethelburg wasn't just "important"—it was structural. They funneled money into universities to cultivate future talent.
Sterling had once mentioned, offhand, that the abandoned building where she used to run experiments had been taken over and rebuilt under Orca's funding.
When Andres realized she was awake, he wrapped up the call quickly.
"Did I wake you?"
He should've stepped out to take it. That was on him.
Maeve reached for her phone, but Andres caught her hand and pressed it down. "I already called you in. You're not going to campus for the next few days."
Maeve smacked his hand away. "You don't seriously think I still don't know that Mr. Yates 'unilaterally' announced I'm expelled, do you?"
