Anya nearly choked on rage.
She'd assumed that even if Andres refused to publicly claim her, he wouldn't nickel-and-dime her—especially not when his rival was involved.
But when Maeve helped Declan bid again, Anya stopped caring whether her card could handle it. She just wanted to win.
The price had already climbed to two million six hundred thousand.
Anya's eyes went red. She slammed her palm down on the button.
She had to win. She needed to win.
But the screen didn't change.
The button had clearly been pressed—yet no bid registered.
That tiny slip cost her everything. The necklace went to Declan.
Anya snapped, her voice turning shrill. "The machine malfunctioned. My button didn't work!"
The outburst sent a ripple of noise through the surrounding seats.
Was she out of her mind?
Staff hurried over. They tested her console repeatedly.
It worked perfectly.
Anya argued anyway, stubborn to the point of madness. "It glitched just now! That necklace was mine—it was mine!"
Maeve, enjoying herself far too much, laughed and said loud enough to carry, "So you're using 'the button broke' as an excuse because you can't afford to bid? You might not be embarrassed, but the man who brought you should be."
Maeve's face and her voice hit Anya like a trigger.
All the anger she'd been swallowing for days finally detonated.
"It was you," Anya shrieked, pointing at Maeve. "You sabotaged it! That's why my button failed!"
