Juniper looked up, studying her awkwardly defensive sister intently.
"He's young, handsome, and has a great body." Juniper leaned in, her eyes wide and innocent. "Such a perfect catch, and you just want to toss him aside?"
"He's nothing special." Coralie turned around, pinching Juniper's soft cheeks. Her eyes curved into a smile. "I've seen much better, sweetheart. It's just... I couldn't keep him."
Her voice dropped to a whisper on the last sentence, almost too quiet for Juniper to hear.
"Couldn't keep him?" Juniper's eyes widened, turning the words over in her mind.
"Yeah." Coralie's smile turned incredibly bitter. She masked the agony in her heart, forcing a bright look. "He died many years ago."
"It's a long story. I'll tell you about it when we have time."
Her sister's cheeks were so soft, Coralie couldn't resist pinching them twice more. She was about to go in for a kiss when she turned and saw Shanley glaring at her like a protective wolf.
Tsk.
Coralie lifted her chin. She couldn't be bothered to pick a fight with him right now.
After all.
He was about to be 'killed off' by her little sister anyway.
"Drive safe," Shanley said to his driver, tossing him the keys.
"Mm." Shanley nodded, then cupped Juniper's face and kissed her before he left.
Juniper looked a bit dazed, gently pushing his hands away as a flush crept up her cheeks.
What was he doing?
Coralie was right there!
"I'm off," Shanley said, pulling back in time to bid Coralie a polite farewell.
"Yeah, yeah." Coralie waved dismissively, watching him leave.
The moment the man stepped out, Coralie rushed over and tackled Juniper in a hug.
"Ahhh, give me a kiss! Mwah, mwah, mwah..."
Juniper froze, her brain temporarily short-circuiting.
