Don't Mess with the Girl with Candy novel Chapter 1277

With his short little legs, Jared had to practically sprint to keep up.

"What do you want?"

Luella couldn't forget how this boy's mother had orchestrated the death of her own mother, or how Yvonne had abused her growing up. She couldn't bring herself to like Jared, let alone be nice to him.

"Let's play soccer." Jared ran around to stand in front of her, looking up with pleading eyes. "Just for a little bit? Please?"

"No." Luella rejected him flatly and kept walking.

She hadn't gone far when the boy's quiet voice drifted over. "Luella, I'm sorry. I'm apologizing for my mom and sister. Please don't hate me."

Luella stopped and looked back.

Jared stood in the sunlight, his head bowed, his eyes red and brimming with tears.

"Why are you apologizing for them?" Luella asked, her tone heavy.

"I'm sorry," Jared repeated. "I know I'm small, but I understand a lot of things. Grandma Megan told me the truth, and I remember it all."

His mother had caused the death of Luella's mother. That was why Luella didn't like him. He understood.

"Luella, just wait. When I grow up, I'll protect you." Jared clenched his little fists, his expression fiercely determined. "By then, Dad, Mom, and Esme won't ever be able to bully you again."

Luella stood frozen, an incredibly complex wave of emotion washing over her.

She had no idea what Lachlan and Yvonne had done in their past lives to deserve a son this innocent and pure-hearted. If only this kid were actually her full blood brother.

"I'll go now." Realizing Luella didn't want him around, Jared turned to leave, looking completely defeated.

"Where are you going?" Luella frowned, finally caving to the softness in her chest. "Didn't you want to play soccer? Where's the ball?"

"Really?!" Jared lit up instantly. He ran to grab his soccer ball and offered it to Luella.

Luella started with some fancy footwork, making Jared clap and cheer in excitement.

They ended up heading to the field and playing hard for several hours until they were drenched in sweat.

Before leaving, Luella patted the boy's head, her tone serious. "You know I don't like you, right?"
