When Bella picked up the phone, Sabrina felt a wave of relief. The Mercer brothers hadn't cornered her daughter.
It wasn't because they were feeling merciful; Bella had simply been down on the production floor all afternoon, keeping her out of the crossfire.
Sabrina quickly summarized the explosive confrontation. Bella fell completely silent, stunned.
It wasn't until Sabrina frantically called her name a second time that Bella finally snapped out of it.
"So that's what the three of them were whispering about behind closed doors... they were investigating the prison tapes.
"I can't believe they actually found proof."
Sabrina's heart dropped. "Wait, you didn't know?"
"Of course I didn't know!" Bella snapped. "For the past few days, they've been locked in the CEO's office with the blinds drawn, plotting. You couldn't get near them. You could hear muffled arguing sometimes, but I never imagined this was what they were fighting about."
Sabrina gritted her teeth in frustration. "If we had known they were digging into this, we could have intercepted it.
"Now it's a total disaster. Martin backed me into a corner. I literally had to drop to my knees and beg him.
"I don't know what to do next. Martin is easy enough to manipulate, but Brandon and Colin are ruthless. They aren't going to let this go."
Hearing the panic in her mother's voice, Bella easily deduced her stepbrothers' motives.
It wasn't exactly a mystery. Lillian was the hottest commodity in the business world right now. Everyone wanted a piece of her empire.
Those with connections were leveraging them for partnerships. Those without were desperately trying to prove their worth just to ride her coattails.
