“Yes,” he answered curtly.

Sylvia looked at the dismantled record player, her brow furrowing slightly. “Grace sent me to help you. What do you need me to do?”

Gabriel’s hands kept moving, his expression cool. “How do you know Vivian?” he asked, his voice low.

Sylvia thought for a moment. “It was a long time ago, before I came to J City. I was following you everywhere back then. One time, I lost you in Paris and ended up wandering into an art gallery. I met Grace there, and we became friends.” She paused, then asked, “What about you? How do you two know each other?”

They seemed so close.

“We’ve known each other since we were kids. My grandfather and Vivian’s father were old friends,” Gabriel said. Suddenly, something occurred to him. He turned to look at her, studying her features, and an idea sparked in his mind. “Let me see the birthmark on your back.”

“What?” Sylvia was caught off guard by the abrupt change in topic.

“Your birthmark. I want to see it again,” he said, his tone serious.

Sylvia’s eyes shifted. Without any coyness, she pulled down the sleeve of her shirt and turned her back to him. “What’s wrong with my birthmark?” she asked, her gaze lowered.

She was wearing a loose T-shirt, and pulling down the sleeve exposed half of her shoulder. Where the birthmark had been, there was now a vibrant mandala tattoo. Gabriel reached out and pushed aside the black strap of her bra, revealing the entire design.

Sylvia tensed slightly at his touch. “Hmm?”

The sound escaped her lips with an unintentional, soft intimacy. She froze, feeling his gaze on her, and quickly turned her head away, her lips pressed tightly together.
