Everyone else in the elevator was startled and instinctively backed away to avoid trouble. Two of the men, friends of the one who'd just been struck, rushed at Xavier in a drunken haze, not bothering to figure out who was in the right.
“Stay behind me and don’t move!”
Xavier said quietly, pulling Norah behind him so that his broad back shielded her. Without hesitation, he kicked out at the oncoming men.
With Xavier’s solid back blocking her, Norah was completely protected. She could hear gasps and occasional cries of pain from the chaos in front of her. Whenever she tried to peek around to catch a glimpse, Xavier would firmly push her back behind him.
Norah thought to herself: He doesn’t want me to be frightened, and maybe he also doesn’t want me to see his fierce side.

When the elevator stopped at the ground floor and the doors opened, those waiting outside froze in shock at the scene. Four men lay on the floor moaning, the rest wore fearful expressions. Standing out among them, a tall and handsome figure led a petite woman out without a backward glance. His indifference and cool composure made him seem both intimidating and effortlessly stylish.
After they left the Midnight Bar and got into Xavier’s car, Norah turned to him, her eyes bright with awe. “Mr. Flemmings, that was amazing!”
Xavier shot her a cool glance. “You think being good at fighting is impressive? I suppose that means everyone in prison should be your idol.”
Norah was stung into silence, her face flushing with embarrassment. She bit her lip and turned her head away.
She understood what he meant. He was mocking her for being a girl who’d grown up sheltered, suggesting her fascination with men who could fight was unusual and naïve.
She felt indignant but didn’t know how to argue. After a moment, she looked at him and said earnestly, “It’s not just about being able to fight. I admire a man who can fight to protect his woman.”
Xavier focused on the road, pretending not to hear.
Norah didn’t hold it against him, and her mood soon brightened. Leaning back in her seat, she smiled at him and said, “It’s been a week since we saw each other!”
