Laurinda suddenly remembered Jarred. She lounged back in her chair, her posture relaxed and unhurried, before asking curiously, “Talbot hasn’t made any trouble this time, has he?”
Just hearing his name caused the room’s mood to sour instantly; the researchers exchanged uneasy glances, clearly biting back frustrated retorts. Their hesitation only sharpened Laurinda’s interest.
“What’s going on? Has he found a new way to stir things up?”
“It’s not that,” Fraser explained. “He’s got his a new student he picked up from God knows where. He’s taking this disciple seriously—went as far as entering her into that December competition at Stonehaven. Supposedly, her goal is to get into Stonehaven’s physics lab.”
Laurinda let out a soft laugh. “Stonehaven’s physics lab? They’d never let outsiders in, especially not someone who isn’t from Korvath. It’s a pipe dream.”
“How talented is this new student, anyway?”
“No idea, but supposedly she’s got plenty of money to work with. She’s already bailed out Jarred’s lab financially and even set up a state-of-the-art lab in our institute.”
Hearing this, Laurinda’s curiosity was well and truly caught. She made a mental note to head back to the institute soon and get a look at this newcomer herself.
Fraser, sensing Laurinda’s intrigue, said, “Jarred and his new student are in Nexus for an academic symposium, likely trying to bolster her credentials before she debuts.
By the way, we all read your latest paper. Are your data solid? Do you have a write-up of your experimental process?”
“The numbers are rock solid, I assure you. I’ll email the full methodology to you—just check your inbox when you’re back.”
“Perfect. Once I review your data and procedures, we can get your paper published. With results this impressive, the whole research community is bound to take notice. It’s been way too long since someone achieved something like this.”
