Hudson’s tone returned to its usual flat, unreadable self. “Let her be upset. Just guard the gate. Don’t let her leave.”

“Yes, sir,” the bodyguard replied respectfully.

In the president’s office of the Walter Group, Hudson hung up the phone and met the amused gaze of his friend, Charles Green.

“What’s up

with Jade?” Charles asked. “Why won’t you let her leave?”

Hudson leaned back in his chair and gave him a cool look. “It’s between my wife and me. None of your business.”

Charles shrugged. “Is it because you moved Amara in, and Jade’s throwing a fit?”

Hudson picked up a document and began making notes with fluid strokes. “Yeah.”

Charles slapped his thigh. “I knew it! That won’t work. Jade adores you; of course, she’d be jealous.”

He rubbed his chin, offering advice. “Why don’t you move Amara and her daughter somewhere else? You know how it is with women. Keep Amara and Jade separate to avoid unnecessary drama.”

Hudson finished his notes, closed the file, set it aside, and picked up another to sign. “Haven’t found a suitable place.”

Charles stared, “What? You own dozens of villas and apartments, and you’re telling me you can’t find one for Amara and her kid?”

“It’s not just that,” Hudson said, finally setting his pen down. “Ronald’s gone. They have no one to rely on. I need to keep them close where I can watch over them.”

Mentioning Ronald, Charles fell silent too.

“But…” Charles hesitated. “The Faith family has been overseas for years, tangled up with several groups there. The situation is complicated. Are you sure you want to get involved?”

Hudson replied firmly, “At the very least, we need to find out how Ronald died.”

“Alright,” Charles said, lazily raising a hand. “Count me in.”

After a pause, he added, “But seriously, locking Jade up isn’t a solution. If you really make her mad and can’t win her back, you’ll be in trouble.”

Hearing this, Hudson recalled Jade asking for a divorce yesterday. A dull ache started at his temples. “Jade isn’t the difficult type. She’s just not used to Amara being around yet. Give it time. She’ll adjust and get along fine with Amara.”

Charles nodded in agreement. “True. Amara always got along with everyone. And Jade’s easy to like. Them getting along is just a matter of time.”

Jade took a taxi from the villa back to the Merchant Villa.

She knew Cindy would have something snide to say, but at least her father, Michael, was her safe harbor.

But as she dragged her suitcase to the front door, she heard faint arguing from inside before she could even open it.
