Since he'd put it that way, Jade had no choice but to accept.
"Then I suppose I should say thank you."
Julian smiled, but then his expression turned serious. He glanced at the closed door of the booth and lowered his voice.
"In a few days, I want to introduce you to someone. I also want to tell you some things about Amara Hoyt and Lyndon Spenser. I told you I'd help you find a way to divorce Hudson—this person will be your greatest ally."
Jade asked instinctively.
"Who?"
Julian's voice was barely a whisper.
"Ronald Faith's uncle, Silas Faith."
"Ronald's uncle?"
Jade racked her brain, but the name didn't ring a bell.
She knew Ronald was Amara's late husband and Hudson's best friend. She knew Hudson claimed he was only helping Amara because Ronald had saved his life.
Whether that was the whole truth, only Hudson knew.
But... why would Ronald's uncle be her greatest ally in a divorce?
Jade couldn't connect the dots; her mind was a whirlwind of confusion.
"What does he have to do with my divorce?"
Julian's expression was guarded.
"He's coming to the city to look into Ronald's death, and you're the best person to help him... that's all I can tell you for now. You can discuss the rest when you meet him the day after tomorrow."
"The day after tomorrow?"
Jade thought of the flight she had already booked.
"I have something very important to do in Riverdale that day. Can we schedule another time?"
Julian was surprised by her decision. Something felt off.
During the time he'd known Jade, he'd seen every bit of the agony and suffering her marriage to Hudson had caused her.
Now that an opportunity was right in front of her, he couldn't think of a reason why she'd turn it down.
Unless the business in Riverdale was even more critical.
"What are you doing in Riverdale? Can you tell me?"
Jade looked down at her glass, her slender fingers tracing the rim.
"To... have a minor procedure."
Julian, sharp as ever, guessed the truth immediately.
A sudden wave of agitation rose in his chest. His old smoking habit flared up, clawing at his nerves.
It was painful, and there was no way to soothe it.
He drank two cups of water in a row, the cool liquid barely dampening the fire in his throat. When he finally spoke, his voice was raspy.
"I'll go with you."
Jade's grip on her glass tightened until her knuckles turned white.
