Amara saw the crowd gathering out of the corner of her eye. Her smug expression began to twist, her grip on Hudson's arm tightening into a claw.

Hudson's brow furrowed. He was about to issue a denial when Amara tugged on his sleeve and whispered urgently in his ear.

"Hudson, I told you... Cortney is so insecure about Ronald being gone that she's been afraid to go to school. If you deny it in front of her classmates now, how is she supposed to face them tomorrow?"

Hudson hesitated, his gaze instinctively flickering toward Jade.

Amara pressed her advantage. "You brought her to the theme park. A denial now will just make it look like a messy cover-up."

Hudson realized she was right. To protect a child's fragile pride, he gave the other kids a small nod.

"That's right. I'm Cortney's father."

He figured Jade would understand he was just being kind.

But a part of him hoped she'd be jealous. If she was jealous, it meant she still cared.
