Amara rushed in at the sound. Seeing Cortney’s reddened wrist, her heart ached, and tears fell immediately.

“Ms. Merchant, if you have a problem with us, take it out on me! Why take it out on Cortney?”

Jade looked over. Hudson was holding Cortney, with Amara standing at his side. The three of them stood united against her, the outsider.

Jade slowly got up from the floor, forcing herself to stay calm. She held out the photo, now ruined with scribbles.

“This is the only photo I have left of my mom. I kept it safely on my nightstand, and now it’s destroyed.”

She paused, her gaze fixed on Amara. “Before you accuse me, Ms. Hoyt, maybe you should ask yourself why you didn’t teach your child better. Or was it you, her mother, who told her to do this on purpose?”

Amara looked shocked. “Ms. Merchant, I know that photo is precious to you, but you can’t just accuse me like that!”

She started crying, “You’ve never liked Cortney and me! Who’s to say you didn’t do this yourself, just to make us leave?”

As Amara cried, Cortney started wailing too. She clung to Hudson’s neck, sobbing, “I’m sorry, Mr. Walter… I just… I thought the picture was pretty and I could draw on it. And… and I found the frame in the room next to mine. It wasn’t in Ms. Merchant’s room! Mommy taught me not to go into other people’s rooms. I remembered!”

Hudson wiped Cortney’s tears, his icy stare landing on Jade. “Jade! Are you so desperate that you’d use a child now?”

A scornful smile touched Jade’s lips. “So you think I ruined my own mother’s photo as part of some plan?”

She seemed calm, but her fingers trembled, and her heart felt like it was being sliced open.

For three years of marriage, she had polished that photo frame regularly. Hudson had seen it. He knew how much it meant to her.

But even so, his first instinct was to side with Amara and her daughter.

She should have known. The truth didn’t matter to Hudson. Her pain and sadness didn’t matter to him.

His heart was completely wrapped up in Amara and Cortney. To him, she was just an outsider with the title of Mrs. Walter.

Hudson frowned, his voice cold and certain. “Cortney is a good girl. She wouldn’t lie. Jade, you’re wrong. Admit it and apologize to Cortney and Amara. Now.”

His words hurt her deeply, especially when she was already suffering. The pain was so intense that she felt numb.

Her eyes red, she glared at him, her voice resolute. “They destroyed the only photo I have of my mom, and you want me to apologize? I’d rather die!”

With that, she turned and went upstairs. Only when the door was shut behind her did the tears she’d been holding back finally fall. They landed on the back of her hand, scalding hot.
