"Amara, you—"
Before she could finish, Lyndon lunged from the brush and gave her a violent shove.
Thud—
Jade was thrown from the path. Her ankle hit a jagged stone, and she let out a muffled groan of pain.
"Jade!"
Jewell rushed to her side, hauling her up.
"Are you okay? Talk to me!"
Jade watched Amara disappear into the dark, her eyes hardening.
"I missed her."
"Forget about her!" Jewell said, her gaze fixed on Jade's ankle, which was already swelling.
"Your leg is a mess. Can you even stand?"
Jade tried to take a step, but the white-hot pain made her vision swim.
"No. It hurts too much."
By then, Julian had reached them.
"Jade!"
He saw Jewell supporting her and his voice was frantic.
"What happened?"
Jade shook her head. "I'm fine. I just twisted my ankle."
Julian knelt down, reaching out to lift her into his arms.
But before he could touch her, another pair of hands snatched her away. Hudson hoisted her up and began marching toward his Maybach.
The sudden movement made Jade gasp. She instinctively wrapped her arms around his neck before realizing who it was. She immediately tried to pull away, struggling in his grip.
"Put me down!"
Hudson's arms were like iron bands around her waist.
"Keep moving and I'll kiss you right in front of everyone."
It wasn't an empty threat. Jade knew he'd do it.
She went rigid, her face contorting with disgust.
"Don't make me sick."
"You still have enough spirit to be nasty, I see."
Hudson's grip tightened until it felt like he might snap her slender waist. He looked down, his eyes bloodshot, his gaze fixed on her lips.
Jade whipped her head to the side, his hot breath hitting the skin of her neck.
Kevin was speechless. Julian tried to push past him again, but Kevin held his ground.
"Sir, Jade is a private person. If you go in there now, you're just going to make things harder for her."
"You think I don't know that?" Julian's voice was thick with suppressed rage.
"But look at what your boss just did to her. You call this 'protecting' her?"
Kevin rubbed the bridge of his nose but didn't move.
"Please, Mr. Forster. Don't make this any more difficult for her than it already is."
He used Jade as a shield, knowing Julian would listen to that.
Julian looked toward the Maybach. The tinted glass was impenetrable; he couldn't see a thing.
He clenched his fists, then slowly let them drop. For Jade's sake, he backed down.
He turned to the guards who had finally caught up. "Find them. I want every person involved in this in a cell by morning."
"Yes, sir!"
Julian turned to Jewell. She was pale and swaying, looking like she might collapse at any second.
"Ms. Ford, my guards will take you to the hospital. I'll stay here with Jade. Don't worry."
Jewell was at her limit. She wanted to stay, but she knew she'd only be a burden if she fainted.
