Bastian couldn't delay any longer. He looked at Jade, his eyes lingering on her with a protective concern.
"Call me the second you need anything. Taking care of you is my job. Don't ever hesitate."
Jade bit her lip. Seeing Bastian check his watch again, she nodded.
"Okay. Go."
Once Bastian drove away, Jade turned and headed inside. But something was weighing on her.
This was the second time Bastian had said it was his "job" to look after her.
It felt like he was carrying a debt, trying to make up for a lifetime of mistakes.
Where did that feeling come from? Why did he keep saying that?
Was it really about Joshua Boswell?
She knew she wouldn't get an answer just by thinking about it.
She pushed the questions down and headed upstairs.
The second she pushed the door to her quarters open, she knew something was wrong.
The smell of blood. It was thick and metallic.
It didn't belong in her room.
Jade went pale. She didn't even set foot inside; she backed away and bolted for the stairs.
But a heavy set of footsteps thundered behind her, closing the distance in heartbeats.
A shadow fell over her. Jade scrambled for her phone to call the police.
A hand clamped around her wrist, yanking her back and pinning her against the hallway wall.
Clatter—
Her phone hit the floor and slid down the hall.
Trapped, Jade looked up into Hudson's bloodshot, manic eyes.
The sight of him made her stomach turn. "Hudson? What are you doing here?"
Once she found her voice, she began to struggle.
"You signed the papers! We're over! Get your hands off me!"
"Divorce? You had to mention it?"
The word triggered something in him. He slammed his hands against the wall on either side of her head, his eyes burning with a terrifying rage.
"We haven't been to court! We don't have a certificate! You're still mine!"
