Hudson stood up, looking at the cotton swab taped to Silas’s finger. His brow furrowed.

“You’re testing Cortney? You think she isn’t a Faith? Amara might be a monster, but that child is innocent. This is an insult to Ronald’s memory! If your family doesn’t want her, fine-Jade and I already planned to raise her ourselves. Just walk away, and we’ll take care of her!”

Silas gave him a mocking, sideways glance.

“Weren’t you the one who signed the divorce papers? You’re making a lot of ‘we’ plans for a man who lives alone.”

Hudson was absolute. “Jade loves me. Remarriage is inevitable. And she has a good heart; she’ll take the girl in.”

Silas looked at him as if he were a mental patient, his expression full of pity. 2

He chose not to argue with a man who had clearly lost his grip on reality.

“The girl’s parentage is in question. The results are out at 3:30 PM. Be here if you want the truth.”

Hudson felt a flicker of unease. “Parentage? What are you talking about?”

Hudson and Silas were cut from the same cloth; they only trusted what they could prove.

But for Silas to bring the girl here meant he had already found a reason to doubt the bloodline.

Could it really be true?

“Did someone give you a lead?”

Silas wasn’t talking. “You’ll have your answers at 3:30.”

“See you in the lobby.”

Hudson returned to his room, his mind a whirlpool of suspicion.

Inside the VIP suite, Bert and Emily were sitting at opposite ends of the room, looking like strangers.

They caught his eye for a second, then immediately went back to their own argument.

It was the same fight they’d been having for thirty years.

Every old grudge was being dug up and re-examined.

The hospital room had simply become their latest theater of war.

Looking at them, Hudson realized their marriage had been a hollow, miserable cage.

There was nothing but resentment and blame between them.

And yet, Jade had never looked at him with that kind of bitterness…

Even when his demands were suffocating, she had always been patient.

She had offered him a warmth he’d never seen in his own home.

Hudson closed his eyes, his fingers tracing the phantom memory of her wrist under his hand.

Lately, the memories were a relentless tide, pulling him back to the days they were together.

He knew with a terrifying clarity that he needed her back.

But the frequency of these thoughts was starting to feel like a fever dream.

Tap, tap, tap.

The sound of footsteps made him snap his eyes open.

It was a young nurse.

“Is that my preliminary report?” he asked.

She nodded but hesitated to hand it over.

“The initial screening… given your heavy smoking and the frequent coughing of blood… the specialists are concerned. They’ve flagged a potential malignancy in the lungs. There are also anomalies in the stomach lining. We need a full biopsy and a CT scan before we can confirm anything.”

Hudson knew he was a physical wreck; the news didn’t even surprise him.

“I understand.”

He took the report, but his first thought wasn’t of his own mortality.

He thought, Jade is so soft-hearted. If she knew I was dying, would she come home to take care of me one last time?

The nurse looked at Bert and Emily and lowered her voice.

“This is a serious diagnosis, sir. You should discuss it with your family.”

Hudson looked at his parents, then rolled the paper into a tight ball.

“There’s no need.”

Bert walked over, his expression like stone.

“Get in here. I have something to say.”

Hudson followed him into the suite. Bert dropped his final ultimatum.

“Shut the door.”

Hudson obeyed. Bert paced the floor, his face darkening with every step.

“You failed with KOE, and you skipped the board meeting. The shareholders are circling. You’re meeting Andrea Hosea in two days. You will secure that alliance, or you’re out. This is the only way to save your seat.”

Hudson gripped the crushed medical report, the paper biting into his palm.

He looked at his father, a wave of profound, weary emptiness washing over him.

“I am sitting in a hospital bed, quite possibly dying, and you won’t even give me a second to breathe?”
