Chapter 348 The Diagnosis
Chapter 348 The Diagnosis
“You show up and start a fight? Is this the ‘new’ version of you I’m supposed to see?”
Hudson’s eyes flickered. “That… that was an accident.”
He paused, his tone shifting into one of sharp accusation.

“And you shoved me to protect him? Who is he? Why is he worth defending? He’s lurking in your room at midnight-I should have finished the job.”
Jade didn’t know where he got the audacity to say those things with such conviction.
But he was always the center of his own universe, incapable of hearing anyone else. She was sick, and the world was spinning.
“If you came here just to say this, you can leave.”
As Jade turned to walk away, Hudson spoke with a desperate urgency.
“Jade, wait… I have lung cancer. The doctors said I need to be admitted immediately or it will spread.”
Jade froze, looking back at him in disbelief.
“You have lung cancer?”
Hudson saw the hesitation and felt a jolt of hope; he pulled the report from his jacket and held
it out.
“I’m not lying. I got the results at the hospital in Kingston today.”
Jade took the paper and scanned it. It clearly showed evidence of malignancy in the lungs.
Recalling his heavy smoking lately, the diagnosis wasn’t exactly a shock.
Hudson moved closer as she read, his hand carefully encircling her wrist.
“Jade, come home with me. With you by my side, I can fight this. I know I can get better if you’re there.”
Jade looked up at him, and for a second, Hudson thought she was going to cave. Then, she wrenched her hand away and shoved the paper back at him.

“What makes you think I’d ever go back to take care of you?”
“Jade, you’ve never been heartless.” Hudson stared into her eyes.
“I don’t believe you can just watch me die and feel nothing.”
Jade let out a cold, sharp laugh.
“Even if I’m not a monster, I’m done being your nurse.”
Hudson went still. Jade met his gaze, her voice final and steady.

“Hudson, listen to me: the day we signed those papers, your life and your health stopped being my concern!”
Boom.
The words hit Hudson like a physical strike, leaving his mind a blank void as his body swayed, his eyes turning a violent red.
He took several deep breaths, trying to swallow the panic rising in his throat, desperate to maintain some shred of control. But when he spoke, his voice was a ragged tremble.
“What did you say?”
His bloodshot eyes bored into hers, searching for any sign that she was lying to hurt him.
“Tell me again. Tell me my life and my health don’t matter to you anymore.”
Jade’s eyes were flat, like a calm lake with no depth-no pity, no hesitation, no emotion at all.
“Exactly.”
“I don’t believe you.”

Hudson lunged forward, grabbing her shoulders, the red in his eyes gleaming under the hotel lights like unshed tears.
“You used to build shelters for the stray cats when it rained because you couldn’t stand the thought of them being cold. You took injured dogs to the vet before you’d even go home. I don’t believe… I won’t believe you’re this cruel to me.”
Jade watched his breakdown, her face remaining a mask of perfect, chilling indifference.
“Do
you want to know why?”

Jade shoved him away, her voice and her gaze making him feel like a complete stranger.
“Because you don’t deserve my pity!”
The sentence was a heavy blow that landed right in the center of his chest, the pain radiating through his entire body until he could barely stand.
Jade didn’t wait for a reaction; she turned and headed for the door, proving her point with
every step.
He was nothing to her now.
Panic seized Hudson, and he lunged to pull her back.
“Jade! Jade, don’t go! Please, just come back!”
Jade was weak from the fever, her limbs feeling heavy and unresponsive.
As Hudson jerked her back, she lost her balance and stumbled backward.
Thud.
Her head hit something, but it wasn’t the hard door-it was something soft and warm.
Jade’s vision blurred for a second; when it cleared, she saw Bastian pulling his hand away from the frame.
She caught his hand, seeing his knuckles were already beginning to swell from the impact.
“Bastian, are you an idiot?” Jade pulled him into the room.
“Get inside. I need to put some cream on that.”
“We are finished! If you lay a single finger on me, I will scream for help and I will call the police for harassment!”
