“No one is treating you like a second-class citizen. As long as you remain the sweet, obedient wife you used to be, nothing between us has to change.”
Jade simply shook her head, the rising tide of tears tightening her throat until she was momentarily speechless.
Hudson pulled her into his arms, and as he breathed in her subtle scent, the restless anxiety that had plagued him for weeks finally settled into a profound peace.
It was as if the person in his embrace was the only reality left, and everything else was just noise.
This sudden surge of emotion caught Hudson completely off guard.
He had never experienced a feeling this raw before, and he didn’t know how to label the ache in his chest.
“No, I can’t go back to that lie. I actually love my life now. I just want to be myself.” Jade shook her head, her voice trembling with a suppressed sob as she clutched his sleeve and looked up at him.
“Hudson, I am no longer fit for the role of Mrs. Walter. Please, just let me go. Sign the papers and end this.”
“Not a chance.” Hudson’s grip only tightened, refusing to let her move an inch.
Jade opened her mouth to argue further, but a violent wave of nausea suddenly surged through her.
“Ugh-”
She gagged uncontrollably, shoving Hudson away before leaning over to retch.
Hudson’s face turned into a mask of dark, offended fury.
“Jade, is my touch really that repulsive to you?”
Jade was unable to respond, retching so violently that the room began to spin and her vision went dark.
Hudson finally realized something was wrong, and seeing her ghastly, bloodless face, he stepped forward to steady her by the shoulders.

“Are you sick? What’s wrong?”
It took several minutes for Jade to empty her stomach and catch her breath.

When she tried to stand, the room tilted on its axis, and she would have hit the floor if Hudson hadn’t caught her.
“I’m taking you to see a doctor.”
The word “doctor” hit Jade’s nerves like a physical blow.
She fought through her weakness and shoved him away with everything she had left.
“I’m fine. I’ve just been run ragged the last few days. I just need to lie down for a while.”
Hudson was skeptical, his instinct telling him to force a medical exam, but the look in her eyes made him swallow his words.
“Fine. I’ll have a private suite prepped for you. You need to sleep.”
They had spent enough time at each other’s throats lately; he didn’t want to spark another war today.
Perhaps if he showed a little flexibility, he might actually get a different result from her.
“Fine…”
Jade agreed, knowing that anything was better than being forced into a prenatal checkup right
now.
Inside the private ward.
Jade sat on the edge of the mattress, staring at Hudson as he settled into a chair across from her.
He had discarded his jacket, wearing only a crisp white shirt with his hair falling messily over his brow, looking uncharacteristically vulnerable.
Jade used to worship the way he looked in a white shirt, but now, the sight of him just made her skin crawl.
“Why are you still here?”
Hudson’s brows pulled together in a look of mild irritation.

“Isn’t it obvious? I’m staying here to keep you company.”
“I don’t want your company.”
Jade’s rejection was instantaneous and sharp.
“You’re just an obstacle to my recovery. Please leave.”

Hudson’s jaw ticked with suppressed annoyance, but he didn’t fight her; he stood up and headed for the door.
He even had the presence of mind to dim the lights and close the door softly behind him.
Jade watched the door click shut, feeling a sense of genuine disbelief.
Had Hudson actually developed a personality overnight?
In the past, he would have done whatever he deemed correct and ignored her opinion entirely.
Yet now, he had actually listened to her and walked away.
