She had given Elmer a sliver of hope. If she ended up turning him down, wouldn't that hurt him even more?
Outside the restaurant, Jonathan sat in a royal blue Bentley, on the phone with Prescott. More accurately, he was listening to Prescott's report.
“Mr. Thomas, all files regarding Miss Rivers's past have been sealed.”
Jonathan's brow furrowed slightly.
“Her birth date and place, family background, her elementary and middle school records—I can't find any of it… At first glance, she has no connection to the Quinn family… but…”
“But what?”
“But before the Quinn family moved to Coralis, their business was centered in Aldonia, just not in Aldenville.”
“Hmm…” Jonathan nodded slowly. He had some recollection of the Quinn family's business in Aldonia.
Back then, the Quinn family's main business was in pyrotechnics, so they had little interaction with the Thomas family. Besides, he was just a child at the time.
Later, the Quinns took the capital they had accumulated in Aldonia and moved to Coralis, where they experienced a meteoric rise, quickly becoming the biggest financial power behind the scenes in the city.
But none of that should have anything to do with Niamh. Niamh's sealed past…
“The Quinn family… an adopted daughter…”
“What was that, Mr. Thomas?” Jonathan’s muttering had caught Prescott’s attention.
“Prescott…”
“Yes, Mr. Thomas.”
The Niamh of today was carrying too many heavy burdens. Although she never complained, Jonathan could see the deep exhaustion etched on her face.
The time Niamh street-raced Ramona was the first time Jonathan had witnessed her decisiveness and courage. If he hadn't seen it with his own eyes, he never would have believed Niamh could handle a race car. Moreover, she dared to accelerate into a turn, taking the corner at the absolute limit and then seamlessly suppressing her opponent.
That level of skill and technique, combined with such guts and audacity, was something an ordinary person could never achieve.
In Jonathan's mind, Niamh had always been the quiet, well-behaved type. She was a stunning beauty, but not flamboyant like Ramona, nor did she try to act cute like Marina. Niamh had always carried herself in a low-key manner, giving off a reserved and conservative impression.
And yet, this same Niamh loved street racing. Not only loved it, but was skilled—an expert, even.
On top of that, Niamh also smoked.
Jonathan had never imagined that beneath her good-girl exterior lay such a rebellious heart.
