A gentle smile played on Jarrett’s lips, but his eyes held a cool contempt.
“Niamh isn’t the person she used to be,” he began, his voice soft. “She controls countless assets now, with The Thomas Group being the largest. When people reach that level, they often become shortsighted and obsessed with profit. The FZZL system has a deeply hidden but serious vulnerability. I tried to warn her, but she wouldn't listen. So, I had no choice but to pretend I was trying to win her back, to become her closest confidant. It was the only way I could get a chance to plug this into her computer and shut down FZZL before it causes real harm.”
As he spoke, Jarrett pulled a small USB drive from the leather bag on his nightstand.
“But Niamh is wary of me now,” he continued, biting his lower lip as if torn by a difficult decision. “She’s terrified I’ll shut down FZZL and cost her a fortune. And besides… after I broke up with you, my heart was truly broken…”
Lana’s heart ached for him, her gaze unintentionally falling on the USB drive.
“So if I plug this into a computer at Niamh's company, it will shut down the faulty system?” she asked.
“Lana…” Jarrett looked at her, his expression one of alarm. “I can’t let you take such a risk for me. And if you do this… you and Niamh might never be friends again.”
Lana fell silent at his words, pressing her lips into a firm line. “If Niamh is really willing to risk the safety of patients using that AI system just for money… then I guess I have to do what’s right, even if it hurts someone I care about.”
Jarrett could tell she wasn't saying it for his benefit, but to convince herself.
“Lana…” He leaned in and kissed her on the cheek. “Thank you for being willing to help me.”
“Of course,” she whispered. “It’s what I should do.” Even if it wasn't for Jarrett, she couldn’t bear the thought of Niamh becoming a person driven only by greed. Clutching the USB drive, her eyes hardened with resolve.

The night was deep and heavy, like a polluted sea.
