Niamh stopped and turned, her bright eyes staring daggers at Jonathan. The intensity of her gaze made his own eyes sting. "Am I the one pushing you, or are you the one pushing me?"
"Niamh…"
"When I loved you, you were in love with Marina. Now that I don't love you anymore, you're sparing no effort to disrupt my life."
"I…"
"Jonathan, I don't know if you've ever truly protected me, but I do know you've done plenty to hurt me." With those cold words hanging in the air, Niamh walked out of the club without a backward glance.
Back in the private booth, Jonathan ran his hands through his hair in frustration. He'd screwed up again. He had finally gotten a moment alone with Niamh, and he hadn't wanted to make her angry. Her accusations echoed in his ears, refusing to fade.
Jonathan collapsed onto the sofa and sat in silence for a long time before whispering to the empty room, "But I never loved Marina…" From start to finish, he had only ever loved one person. She was Rina, and she was also Niamh. In his mind, he had never betrayed Niamh, never betrayed his vow to Rina. But that wasn't how Niamh saw it.
Jonathan's mind was a chaotic mess. Facing reality was indeed more painful than the false dream he'd been living in. But he didn't want to be in a coma again. Escaping wouldn't solve anything.
As night fell, Elmer finished work and was about to ask Niamh out to dinner. Even though Niamh had rejected his mother's idea of a sham marriage, she hadn't rejected him as a person. He didn't think he was completely out of chances. Just as he took out his phone, a call came in. The caller ID was just a string of numbers.
Elmer's face changed instantly. Although no name was displayed, he knew exactly who it was. This number had called him once before, and he had memorized it on sight.
"Hello?" Elmer hesitated for a second before answering.
"..."
"But it doesn't matter if you tell me or not. It wouldn't be difficult for me to find out where you're having dinner." The moment Jonathan finished speaking, Elmer hung up the phone.
His phone buzzed again; Jonathan had sent him a contact request on WhatsApp. After a brief hesitation, Elmer accepted. As soon as he did, a location ping from Jonathan arrived. It was a bar.
Realizing he couldn't get out of this meeting, Elmer sighed in resignation. He really didn't want to see Jonathan. It wasn't because Jonathan was his rival for Niamh's affection, but because he always felt a sense of defeat around him—a fact he'd long been unwilling to admit.
Although Niamh had told him she had neither agreed to a sham marriage with him nor to reconciling with Jonathan, which on the surface put them on equal footing in her eyes, Elmer still felt uneasy. Niamh hadn't agreed to get back with Jonathan, but she had been the one to wake him up.
