Niamh didn't know whether to laugh or cry. She decided to ignore the newly formed father-son alliance and focused on the menu. As she was ordering, a janitor mopping the floor nearby caught her eye. "Is that...?" If Niamh remembered correctly, she had seen that woman among the Quinn family's relations the day Wade had summoned her for the reading of her grandpa's will.
She didn't have much of an impression of the extended family, but she did recall a middle-aged woman who had spoken to her rudely. And now, here was that same woman, working as a janitor in this restaurant. Niamh couldn't quite figure it out. If she wasn't mistaken, the woman should have inherited some money from her grandpa's will—certainly not enough to be so down on her luck. But Niamh wasn't particularly interested in other people's business, so she said nothing.
Across the table, Jonathan was playing with Marlin. A one-year-old can't speak clearly, so you have to guess what they want. Niamh did the same, but whenever she guessed wrong, Marlin would get frustrated and start to cry. Niamh found herself watching them. She noticed that Jonathan seemed to guess Marlin's intentions correctly every single time, as if they were perfectly in sync.
"Aba... Dada... Aba-baba..." Even though he couldn't form proper words, Marlin's little mouth never stopped moving. Whenever Jonathan heard something that sounded like "Dada," a blissful smile would spread across his face. Niamh took a sip of water. She wasn't sure if it was the warmth of the water or something else entirely, but a gentle warmth spread through her chest.
After a while, the food arrived. The baby meal Marlin had "ordered" with the picture menu consisted of common items like small cod dumplings, vegetable patties, and soft beef noodles. However, it was all arranged to look like a cartoon pig, which made Marlin drool. It was hard to tell if he wanted to eat the food or the pig.
