Perhaps it was the change of scenery or the shift to business, but the atmosphere in the study was far less relaxed than it had been during his video call with Marlin. Flynn swallowed nervously. Facing Niamh and Jonathan, he felt like an employee undergoing a performance review by the CEO and his wife.
“Do you know why I specifically asked you to come here?” Niamh asked, getting straight to the point.
Flynn shook his head. “No…” As Niamh’s legal counsel for her foundation on Whispering Island, he assumed she needed him for some legal matter.
Just then, he saw her slide a folder across the desk toward him.
“This man… wasn’t he a classmate of yours?”
Flynn opened the folder and froze. “Isn’t this Wade?”
“Yes, that’s him,” Niamh nodded.
Wade—the patriarch’s most trusted lawyer.
Two years had passed since Ramona murdered the patriarch. At this point, finding any trace of the poisoned slice of cake was impossible. Their only way in was through this man, Wade.
Seeing the grim expressions on Niamh and Jonathan's faces, Flynn understood that his old classmate was a key figure in whatever important business they had in Coralis.
“Wade… we both got our doctorates from the International University of Law and Politics. After graduation, we went our separate ways. I stayed in Aldenville, he went elsewhere… I just heard at a reunion a few years ago that he was doing pretty well for himself in Coralis.”
Niamh could tell that Flynn and Wade weren’t particularly close. And as her employee, he had no reason to lie.
“People change,” Jonathan suddenly said from beside her. His voice was low and quiet, yet carried undeniable weight.
Niamh knew he was right. She couldn’t form an opinion of Wade based solely on Flynn’s old memories and classify him as a good person. After all, Ramona had murdered the patriarch, forged the will, and brought ruin upon the Quinn family—and Wade was connected to all of it.
Niamh’s expression hardened slightly.
“Flynn… Wade is now the chief counsel for the Quinn family.”
“The Quinn family…” Flynn’s own face grew serious. Niamh hadn't told him the details of her history with them, but he had certainly heard of the powerful family.
