All she wanted to do now was shop—and buy, buy, buy!
As it happened, Lana had heard Niamh was back in Aldenville and also wanted to go shopping, so the two of them hit it off and made plans. Jonathan, who had been sticking to Niamh like glue, was initially uneasy about her going out alone with Lana. But it was a girls' day out, and it really wasn't appropriate for him to tag along. Niamh wouldn't have agreed anyway.
So, he had no choice but to arrange for bodyguards to protect her discreetly.
"Are you sure you don't need me to go with her?" Prescott asked Jonathan in the living room. Ever since Jonathan had assigned him the task of ensuring Marlin's safety, he had been by the boy's side constantly.
"You should stay here and continue to protect Marlin," Jonathan told him.
While Prescott wasn't a professional bodyguard, in terms of both ability and trustworthiness, he was number one in Jonathan's eyes. And for Niamh right now, Marlin was the most important person in her life. Therefore, Jonathan felt it was best for Prescott to remain with Marlin.
By this time, Niamh had already left to meet Lana. Jonathan was about to go play with Marlin when his phone suddenly rang. The caller ID on the screen was no longer an unknown number.
"Elmer?" Jonathan answered the phone, a bit surprised.
"It's me…"
"Is there a reason you're calling?"
"You know Nia and Lana went out shopping, right?"
"Yes."
Whether he sensed Jonathan's sharp gaze or it was just a coincidence, Elmer turned around at that exact moment and their eyes met.
"You're here."
"Yeah, am I late?"
"No, you're right on time." Elmer didn't even glance at a watch or his phone. Jonathan just shrugged.
The two of them rode the elevator in silence to the men's shoe department. Elmer had said he wanted Jonathan to help him buy shoes, but Jonathan's role was really just that of a silent companion. From choosing the brand to picking the style, Elmer didn't ask for Jonathan's opinion once, as if Jonathan were just thin air. And Jonathan wasn't about to waste his time acting like a personal shopper for Elmer. As far as he could remember, the only person he'd ever picked out shoes for was Prescott—partly because they were close, and partly because Prescott's own taste was, to put it mildly, atrocious.
After about half an hour of browsing, Elmer had bought his shoes. Jonathan followed Elmer to the top floor, to an ice cream parlor.
