Serena walked quickly. "What was the specific trigger? Wasn't her condition stable before?"
When the young woman had called her, her voice had sounded like she was recovering well.
Dr. Dawson explained, "This afternoon, a girl claiming to be Miss Blackwood's friend came to visit. They were alone for about half an hour, and then Miss Blackwood suddenly had an emotional breakdown…"
Serena frowned. "A friend? What set her off?"
Dr. Dawson nodded and, as they walked, concisely updated Serena on the patient's condition.
The two made their way to the intensive care unit.
Two figures stood outside the door. Serena immediately noticed the tall, elegant man leaning against the wall.
His expression was grim, and the tension around him was thick. His devilishly handsome face lacked its usual lazy, carefree air.
A cigarette was perched between his long, distinct fingers, the ash grown long, yet he hadn't moved at all.
Standing next to him was another handsome man with ash-white hair, pacing back and forth.
Hearing their approach, he looked up. When his eyes landed on Serena, they widened. "Hey, it's you... the young lady?!"
Serena narrowed her eyes, glancing at the man.
She didn't recognize him.
"Miss Lancaster." Nicholas's eyes lit up slightly upon seeing Serena.
He stubbed out his cigarette and threw it in the trash can. "Go on in and take a look."
Serena glanced at the ICU door, then back at Nicholas.
"The person inside is my sister," Nicholas said, pausing before adding, "My biological sister."
"Oh."
So that’s what Nicholas meant earlier by a “life-saving favor” — she had saved his sister’s life.
The heart rhythm on the ECG slowly returned to a steady, regular pattern.
Serena buttoned Brianna’s gown back up, then finally spoke. “You can come in.”
They rushed into the ward at once, only to see that Brianna’s expression had relaxed, and her breathing had evened out.
The hard lines of Nicholas’s face finally eased a fraction. “Brianna… she’s okay now, right?”
Nathan was stunned. He stared at Brianna in disbelief, then looked back at Serena’s calm, collected face.
He had seen for himself how critical Brianna’s condition had been just now—how a swarm of top specialists had crowded around her, and yet all the measures they’d taken had done almost nothing.
But this beautiful, young girl had walked in with nothing but a few silver needles and, in a matter of minutes, turned around a situation that even a roomful of experts couldn’t handle.
What kind of supernatural being was she?
No wonder Nicholas treated her so differently from everyone else.
