Benedict and Logan were crammed together on a long wooden bench, each clutching a roasted sweet potato they had absolutely no appetite for.
Logan lowered his voice. "When Serena gets here, we play nice. She's soft-hearted. She'll definitely take us back."
Benedict clenched his fists. "She just went to visit Grandma's grave. She grew up with her; they were closer than anyone. If we just play the grandmother card, she'll have to help us out of respect for her memory."
"Exactly!" Patrick chimed in. "Serena worships your grandmother. As long as we use her name to beg for mercy, Serena will grant our request just to let her rest in peace!"
They were eagerly scheming exactly how to manipulate her emotions using her dead grandmother.
Creak.
The battered wooden gate to the courtyard was pushed open.
Serena walked in, her face devoid of expression, radiating an absolute, bone-chilling frost.
Just as she entered the yard.
She came face-to-face with Derek, the second son of the Wynn family, who had a medical kit slung over his shoulder.
Unlike the rest of the Wynns—who were completely useless outside of high society—Derek had been a brilliant young doctor. He actually had a tangible skillset.
But ever since he had been fired from Starlight Royal Medical Center, no other hospital had dared to hire him.
Left with no other options, he had been forced to scrape by as the village doctor here in Blackwood Creek just to survive.
In the past, he had only dealt with the most complex, high-profile medical cases, with desperate patients throwing absurd amounts of money at him just for a consultation.
Now, he was trapped in this desolate wasteland, spending his days treating minor ailments like backaches and the common cold.
The villagers even dragged their sick pigs and cows to him for checkups.
His arrogance and pride had been completely shattered over the past few weeks.
He never thought he'd actually see Serena again.
