That one word, “Nicholas,” finally drew the attention of the Lancaster family away from Serena.
All eyes turned to the doorway.
“That Blackwood kid?” Old Mr. Lancaster said, surprised, before waving him over warmly. “What are you doing here? Come, come, sit down. You’re just in time for Serena’s celebration.”
The Lancaster and Blackwood families had always been on good terms. In particular, Old Mr. Lancaster and Old Mr. Blackwood shared a life-and-death bond from their younger days, which had led to the childhood betrothal agreement between their families.
Moreover, Old Mr. Lancaster had always admired Nicholas.
He beckoned Nicholas over, then remembered that he hadn’t held a formal party to introduce Serena to society yet, so no one in their circle knew the Lancasters had found their long-lost treasure.
He eagerly started to make the introduction.
“Come, this is my…”
“I know, Old Mr. Lancaster. Serena. Serena Lancaster, your granddaughter,” Nicholas Blackwood said, smiling politely as he greeted everyone in turn.
He walked calmly over to Old Mr. Lancaster’s side. “I heard the Lancasters were having a family dinner here, so I decided to come uninvited. I hope you don’t mind, Old Mr. Lancaster.”
“I’m thrilled you could come to my granddaughter’s celebration. Why would I mind?” Old Mr. Lancaster replied, then asked casually, “So you already know Serena, Nicholas?”
Nicholas hummed in agreement. His narrow, captivating eyes flickered toward Serena, and the curve of his lips deepened. “You could say I’m practically half a Lancaster. I couldn’t miss a Lancaster family dinner.”
“Half a Lancaster?” Old Mr. Lancaster’s welcoming gesture froze. The smile vanished from his face, and his eyes sharpened.
He narrowed his eyes. “What do you mean by that, Blackwood kid?”
The other Lancasters instantly shot wary glares at Nicholas.
He wanted to bring up the past—the childhood betrothal that the Blackwood and Lancaster families had arranged years ago!
Their glares were like daggers.
But Nicholas just smiled, a devastatingly charming look on his face, and said with perfect composure, “Now that both parties are present, I believe the childhood engagement my grandfather and you arranged for our families… should now be put on the table.”
“What engagement? There’s no engagement!” Old Mr. Lancaster was the first to slam the table, his eyes wide with indignation. “What century are we in? We don’t do that kind of arranged marriage nonsense anymore! A childhood betrothal? Are you even more old-fashioned than this old fossil?”
“Exactly!” Catherine quickly took her daughter’s hand. “The Lancaster and Blackwood families don’t need to rely on their children’s marriage to secure anything!”
Edward cleared his throat. “Nicholas, you must be joking. Our Serena just came home. She hasn’t even had a chance to enjoy being with her family. A joke between the older generation shouldn’t be taken seriously.”
Julian pushed up his gold-rimmed glasses. His smile was gentle, but his voice was sharp. “Mr. Blackwood, our only wish for our Serena is for her to be happy. As for her future, we will only respect her wishes. We will never interfere, much less bind her with any kind of engagement.”
