It was simply because Catherine trusted her own daughter. For this young woman to be Serena’s best friend, to have earned Serena’s approval, her character was surely not a concern. Serena was much smarter than them.
Besides, it was a classic case of loving her by association. Since this was a best friend Serena approved of, one she’d grown up with, it was only natural to treat her like her own child. All of Catherine’s warmth and affection for Black Jack was built on the foundation of Serena’s attitude toward her.
When Black Jack heard Catherine actually respond, her eyes shone even brighter. She turned to Serena with a grin. “Serena, my love, this is the first time in my life I’ve ever called anyone ‘Mom,’ and it’s your mom!”
Her words made the Lancasters look at Black Jack with an added layer of sympathy. She grew up with Serena, which meant… this young woman also came from the countryside. And never having called anyone ‘Mom’ meant she was a child who grew up without one.
Oh, the poor thing. Their own precious Serena must have had it just as hard.
At the thought, Catherine’s eyes reddened. She patted Black Jack’s hand and said, “You’re Serena’s best friend. If you’re willing, you can call me ‘Mom,’ just like Serena does.”
Black Jack didn’t hesitate for a second. With a natural and forthright air, she called out in a clear, crisp voice, “Mom!”
As she spoke, she casually looped an arm around Catherine, pulling her into a one-armed hug. “You’re my darling Serena’s mother, so you’re my mother too! For the time I’m in Elyndor, you’re my real mom! Don’t you worry, with me here in Elyndor, I’ll have your backs! If you have any enemies, any rivals, just let me know, and I’ll…”
“Hazel,” Serena cut in, her voice cool and light, as she listened to her friend’s increasingly outrageous and excited rambling.
This girl… she really had no filter. She’d say anything. Was she not afraid of being arrested by the authorities as some kind of subversive?
