Before he could finish, he suddenly felt an ice-cold chill creep up the back of his neck.
All sound ceased.
Riley instinctively flinched, then snapped his head up toward the source of the chill.
He met a pair of dark eyes as deep and cold as a frozen pond.
Though there was no emotion in those eyes, just a placid calm, that very stillness was more terrifying than any threat.
Riley shuddered, the hair on his arms standing on end. He felt as if he’d been plunged into an ice cellar, and all his sentimental sorrow was instantly frozen solid.
His entire body went rigid. He stiffly turned his head, slowly, deliberately, to face his two friends.
Then, he raised his hand and slapped the back of the still-chattering Trevor’s head.
He raised his hand again and slapped the back of Darius’s head.
His voice suddenly shot up, almost cracking as he yelled, “Good match? What good match? What love rival? What chase to the ends of the earth? That’s Nicholas’s future wife! If you spout any more nonsense, I’ll beat you up!”
“My future sister-in-law and Nicholas look perfect together! It’s a match made in heaven! They’re the perfect match, the ultimate match, a cosmically, unbelievably perfect match!”
This deafening roar left Darius and Trevor completely stunned.
They rubbed the back of their aching heads and looked at Riley with wounded expressions. “Riley, you were the one who said…”
“Said what? I didn’t say anything!” Riley interrupted frantically, his guilt palpable. He secretly stole a glance toward the dance floor.
When he saw that the terrifying gaze had been withdrawn, he finally let out a breath of relief.
