"Holden? Holden?!" Kiera screamed in pure terror.
A swarm of nurses hauled the hospital bed violently out of the room.
Anna caught a glimpse of her grandfather thrashing on the mattress. His skin was a horrifying shade of purple, his entire body seized in violent convulsions, thick white foam spilling past his lips.
Next to him, the heart monitor was screaming as the line spiked off the charts.
Even though Anna knew exactly what was supposed to happen, the sheer violence of it made her jump out of her skin.
It was too fast.
Augus had explicitly promised it would take at least an hour for the drug to induce the symptoms.
It hadn't even been ten minutes...
But there was no turning back now. The plan was already in motion!
Serena was going to take the fall for this!
As the resuscitation team rushed her grandfather toward the ER, Anna scanned the chaos of the hallway.
Her eyes instantly locked onto Serena, who had just rushed over. Serena's cold, calculating gaze was already fixed on her.
Anna's heart slammed violently against her ribs, her carefully constructed mask slipping into a momentary twitch of panic.
But she recovered instantly, tilting her chin up to meet Serena's stare head-on. "Serena, I warned you! I told you your amateur skills were no match for these top-tier experts! I warned you not to get arrogant, playing doctor with your Medicinal Tonic and those needles! Look what you've done. Look what happened!"
Douglas arrived right behind her, catching Kiera just as her legs gave out, stopping her from blindly chasing after Holden's stretcher. "What the hell happened?!"
"It was Serena!" Anna pointed an accusing finger at her. "She messed with Grandpa's treatments, feeding him some random tonic and sticking him with needles! She wanted the family shares, she wanted the glory, and now she's nearly killed him!"
Hearing the accusation, Douglas snapped his head toward her, his brows pulling into a lethal scowl. "Why the hell are you here?"
He had locked her away at the estate to force some sense into her head, and she had somehow slithered out?
Terrified by the sheer murderous intent in Douglas's eyes, Anna instinctively shrank back. "Grandma... Grandma missed me. She felt bad for me, so she let me out..."
Swallowing her fear, she stiffened her neck and pointed again. "But I'm not the problem here! She is! You brought a snake into this house, and now Grandpa is paying the price!"
"Anna."
Serena's voice was an absolute void of emotion. "Why are you so quick to assume this has anything to do with me?"
The dead look in her eyes sent a terrifying chill straight down Anna's spine. "Who... who else could it be..."
