Chapter 167 Sent to the Gallows
Laila’s POV:
After lunch, Samuel and I set out.
“Quick and clean. Let’s finish this before sunset.”
“No problem.”
Samuel laughed easily.
We shifted into our wolf forms and led the elite werewolf warriors who had gathered, charging toward the Umbra Order’s base.
The battle was easier than expected.
In three hours, we had crushed their nest. Blood soaked into the ground beneath our feet.
When I shifted back into human form and stood in the center of the ruins, the sun hadn’t completely set yet.
From the basement, we rescued 17 children.
The oldest was no more than ten. The youngest was still an infant. They huddled together like a litter of frightened pups. When they saw us, some cried, some trembled, and some were so broken they couldn’t even make a sound
There were also 23 women.
Nine of them were still underage girls.
Their eyes were hollow, like lifeless lakes. I didn dare look too closely or think too deeply about what they had endured. Because the moment I thought about Raymond having once been like this, the scar in my chest felt like it was tearing open again.
All the criminals who survived were tied up. At dawn, they would be escorted to Lunaris. After their trial, they would be sent to the gallows at first light.
While taking inventory of what we seized, I found a box in the Umbra Order leader’s private chamber.
It was black velvet, about the size of a palm, with wolf-head patterns wrapped around the corners. It looked familiar.
It was almost identical to the one Estelle had one “given” my mother.
I slowly opened it.
It was empty, but a faint, strange fragrance lingered inside. I didn’t know what had once been kept in it.
I kept the box for myself.
That single similarity wasn’t enough to prove anything, so I didn’t mention it to Samuel.
