My Convicted Wife is My Mate (Bella and Kane) novel Chapter 49

chapter 42
BELLA’S POV

Kane moved away from me. My heart was beating so fast that I could barely hear anything else.

“What is this place?” I finally managed to ask, trying to focus on anything but him.

“Caretaker’s cabin,” he said simply.

“Are… you the caretaker?”

He chuckled “No.”

“Oh.” My eyes scanned the cabin again.

I was looking for something normal to focus on. It was small but cozy. It had one open room with a loft above. There was a small cooker on the counter.

The table was set for two.

“Does the caretaker know we’re here?” I asked carefully.

He paused for a beat then looked at me. “No. But I let a friend know we’d be in the area. He offered this place.”

“Oh,” I murmured. “So… these are your pack lands?”

“Yes.”

I felt a bit uneasy. I couldn't help it.

I crossed my arms “Kane… I’m a rogue. You shouldn’t have brought me here. If anyone finds out, it could cause problems for you.”

He turned, and when his eyea met mine, it sent a chill down my spine, not from fear, but something far more dangerous. “Let me worry about that.”

Before I could reply, his hand closed gently around my arm. My pulse jumped. His touch was firm and warm and it lingered just a little too long. Then he began unbuttoning his jacket… and mine.

“Wha—”

He took both jackets off and tossed them onto the couch. “I’ll start a fire. With all those layers, you’ll overheat.”

“I’m already hot…” The words slipped out under my breath before I could stop them. Just not because of the fire.

“Hmm?” he murmured without looking back. He crouched to stoke the embers in the hearth.

“Nothing,” I said quickly. “It’s fine.”

My thoughts were a mess. I silently chanted to myself: Brother. Think of him as your brother.

Except… no brother I’d ever known looked like that. His bare chest gleamed in the firelight. The scars on his skin only made him more rugged. His dark hair fell into his eyes in that maddeningly careless way, and I could barely breathe.

“You’re staring, sister,” he said in a teasing tone “Is everything okay?”

I looked away immediately, staring at the floor, then the ceiling, anywhere but his eyes. “Yes. Yup. Perfectly fine.”

Kane smirked and moved into the small kitchen. He checked the fridge, lifted the lid of the slow-cooker, then turned to me.
