Arriving at the hospital, Elena saw Chris and his men. They were all banged up.
Chris, in particular, had a bruised and swollen face. It looked like he had taken quite a beating.
"Chris, what happened to you?" Elena asked with concern.
"Hiss... Elena, why are you here?" Chris asked, fighting back the pain.
"Your assistant called me. What happened? Who did this?"
"Miss Whelan, it's like this: Chris got into a fight with Lucas Maddox's people. Lucas was saying he was going to hurt you and was insulting you! That's why Chris started swinging."
Lucas Maddox?
How did Chris run into Lucas?
"Elena, don't worry. I'm fine," Chris comforted her.
"Chris, Lucas isn't someone to mess with easily. How did you end up fighting him? Look at you—you're the one who's hurt now!"
Chris grinned, wincing slightly. "It's nothing, don't worry. You're my sister. If someone insults you or wants to hurt you, naturally, as your brother, I have to stand up for you. Besides, Lucas is hurt worse than I am. Don't worry, I didn't lose. I just look a bit messy, sorry to make you worry!"
Elena felt incredibly moved. This was family.
Even covered in bruises, he was protecting her.
Her eyes began to well up with tears.
"Chris, you're so stupid."
She picked up the antiseptic to clean his wounds herself.
"If Mom and Dad find out, they'll be worried sick."
"It doesn't matter. They would support me. You're their daughter. Even if I'm useless, I can't just sit back and do nothing when I hear things like that!"
Looking at her brother's purple, bruised face and realizing how good he was to her, Elena felt a lump in her throat.
