"Yes, I brought him here. His family was busy today and asked me to keep an eye on him. I left him in the breakroom over there, but he wandered off. Please, just let it go. He honestly didn't mean to do it!" Elena said, shielding Ethan behind her.
"Elena, I'm scared! They hit me..." Ethan sobbed, tears streaming down his face.
"Looking at him... he really does seem to have the mind of a child."
"If he doesn't know any better, let's just drop it."
"Yeah, he actually looks pretty pitiful."
Seeing the crowd's sympathy shift, Elaine grew annoyed.
"So what if he's disabled? Elena, you knew he had issues, yet you still brought him into the office. What on earth were you thinking?"
Seeing Elena being cornered, Claire stepped forward to defend her.
"Elaine, Elena was just trying to help out. I apologize on her behalf. Let's just let this go. He has special needs; it's not like he chose to be this way. As people without those struggles, we should show a little more compassion."
"Mind your own business! Who do you think you are? Does bringing a mentally unstable person into the workplace suddenly make Elena right?"
Elaine refused to let it go, forcing Claire to lower her head in silence.
Elena fired back, "I wasn't wrong to bring him here; my only mistake was taking my eyes off him. Elaine, if you have a problem with it, report it to management. Get me fired if you have the guts. I know you can't stand me, but unless you're actually going to do something about it, shut your mouth!"
With that, Elena grabbed Ethan's hand and led him away from the crowd.
"You... Elena, you're going to pay for this!" Elaine seethed with anger.
Furious, she marched straight to Sienna's office.
"Sienna, does Elena have connections?"
Sienna genuinely wanted to give Elaine a hint, considering she had been with the company for years.
So, she offered a subtle warning. "Yes. Do you understand now? There are certain things I prefer not to spell out completely."
"I know. Her connection is Claire, isn't it? I heard they're sisters. I was the one who trained Claire back in the day. How is that a powerful connection? Don't tell me you're keeping someone like her around just for Claire's sake?"
Sienna stared at Elaine, having previously thought she was a smart woman.
She hadn't realized her perspective was so incredibly narrow.
"Elaine, could you stop treating Claire like your sworn enemy? You're colleagues. You need to focus your energy on your designs, not on targeting Claire. You're completely obsessed with her, and I honestly don't know what else to say to you. I've told you what you needed to hear. You can go back and think it over yourself. Bottom line: I am not firing Elena. Even if you quit, she stays!"
