The women washing their vegetables along the bank were absolutely stunned, completely terrified by the sight.
They had been coming down to the river for years, and this was the first time a corpse had ever washed up!
"I'll go check!" Dylan said.
He rushed down to the water's edge, grabbed a nearby pole, and worked with the others to pull the body onto the bank.
"Oh my God, what kind of awful luck is this? Running into something like this... how am I supposed to sleep tonight?" Mrs. Kelly muttered nervously.
People nearby caught wind that a body had been pulled from the water and all came running to see what was going on.
Elena started to walk over, but Mrs. Kelly quickly stopped her. "Elena, don't look. You're too young to be seeing this kind of gruesome stuff. You'll give yourself nightmares."
Elena offered a tight smile. "It's fine, I can handle it."
Back when she was the leader of the Moon family, tearing through her enemies in Falveria, she had practically crawled her way out of piles of corpses.
She had seen it all. One dead body was nothing.
"It's a woman," Dylan announced.
She couldn't have been dead for more than a few days. The body hadn't started to decay yet, though it was visibly bloated from the water.
Elena suddenly gasped in shock.
Noticing her reaction, Dylan asked, "Elena, what's wrong? Do you know her?"
"I do. That's Daphne. She was the maid who took care of Ethan. After she was caught abusing him, Mrs. Sinclair was going to press charges, and she was hauled away. How did she end up dead out here? Could it be... Mrs. Sinclair?"
Suspicion flared in Elena's mind.
Mrs. Sinclair was the most obvious suspect. After all, Daphne had abused her son. Any mother would have snapped.
Elena had seen Daphne the day she was brought in, so she recognized her face immediately.
When the maid was taken away, Elena assumed Mrs. Sinclair would follow standard legal procedures, press charges, and send her to prison.
She certainly didn't expect her to turn up dead.
