The Sinclair family actually came to call off the engagement!
Edward's family was now reveling in the misfortune, especially Cathy.
After just getting slapped, she felt she could finally reclaim some of her dignity.
"Hmph! Some people really thought they were going to marry into money, and look what happened—they got dumped! What is there to be so cocky about? Trash is still trash! Let's see you try to act tough now. You used to throw your weight around this house just because you were engaged to a Sinclair!" Cathy mocked mercilessly.
Maggie also felt a profound sense of vindication.
"Exactly. Now that the engagement is off, there's no way we can rely on the Sinclair family anymore. Whatever, it's not like we ever expected a certain someone to actually bring any real benefits to the Whelan family anyway. We should just count our blessings that she didn't piss off the Sinclairs and drag us all down with her."
The feud between Daniel's and Edward's families had nothing to do with Gavin's branch of the family.
Gavin asked in confusion, "A sudden cancellation? Could it have something to do with what happened recently?"
The matriarch asked, "Gavin, do you know something?"
"I heard a few days ago that Mr. Sinclair stripped Dylan of his position as CEO of the Sinclair Group. And now they're calling off the engagement. It looks like Dylan has completely lost his power."
The matriarch remained silent for a long time, likely struggling to process this devastating news.
The Whelan family had been in decline for years, and their current standing in Cresden City was practically nonexistent.
Without the powerful backing of the Sinclair family, the Whelans would be thrown into absolute crisis.
Before this, people still showed the Whelans a modicum of respect simply because of Elena and Dylan's engagement. After all, they were considered in-laws to the Sinclairs.
The Whelan family had reaped plenty of benefits from that connection.
Besides, she had never planned on relying on the Sinclair family's wealth or status. Whether they were involved or not made no difference to her.
As long as she and Dylan were okay, that was all that mattered.
"I've said from the beginning that we couldn't count on Elena's engagement! Now look at us, the whole city is going to treat us like a laughingstock!" Maggie fanned the flames.
Daniel turned to the matriarch. "Please don't worry. We will talk to Dylan privately and find out exactly what is going on."
"Hmph! What is there to ask? You absolute embarrassments! The Sinclair family has explicitly rejected the marriage, what more is there to say? Besides, he's not even the CEO of the Sinclair Group anymore, so the connection is worthless. I never expected you to achieve greatness, but I certainly didn't expect you to bring us such utter humiliation. From now on, the Whelan family will be nothing but a joke to everyone else!"
That comment struck a nerve with Elena.
"What are you talking about? How is calling off an engagement a humiliation? I'm not the first person in the world to have a breakup. Over the past few years, when you were all riding the Sinclair family's coattails and lining your pockets, I didn't hear a single complaint. Now that the engagement is off, you're blaming us for everything. So you all get to enjoy the perks when things are good, but my family has to shoulder all the blame when things go south?"
