"Bullshit. You never take accountability for your own actions. You just blame everyone else."
Emily sneered. "When the Sterling family was thriving, you lived like a princess while I was feeding pigs in the Outer Northern Farmlands! Once we switched places and you became the Whelan family's golden girl, my family collapsed. Tell me, Elena, haven't you been the one living the high life all along? Haven't I been the one suffering?"
"You've got it all wrong, Emily. Let me be perfectly clear: the Sterlings never treated me well. You have no idea what I went through. The only reason the Sterling family transformed from a small business into a publicly traded empire was because I was pulling the strings from the shadows."
"And the Whelan family's success? That was me too. I'm not just 'living the high life.' Wherever I go, wealth follows. Do you understand that?"
Emily gritted her teeth. "I don't believe you. Not for a second. None of that had anything to do with you!"
"Oh, didn't it? The day after I left the Sterlings and you came back, Thomas Sterling lost his biggest contract with Aurelis Holdings Group. He was completely shut out. Then your brothers started falling like dominoes. That was all my design."
Emily stared in disbelief. "You're bluffing. How could you possibly control Aurelis Holdings Group?"
"Believe what you want. I am the true owner of Aurelis. Sean Maddox works for me."
Emily felt the wind knocked out of her. She couldn't fathom that Elena wielded that kind of terrifying power.
But the timeline matched flawlessly.
The exact moment they swapped lives, the Sterlings began to bleed out.
She had thought Elena was just a jinx. But when Elena went to the Whelan family, they struck gold overnight.
Even so, Emily's pride refused to accept it.
"So what?" Emily laughed bitterly. "You're still trapped in this sunless pit, same as me. You really think you're making it out of here alive?"
"I know I am."
