"Yes," Greg said with a hard finality. "I need to know what happened to Sebastian. Why is he on the brink of death? Tell me exactly what transpired at the gala last night."
Jared fell into a heavy silence. After a long moment, he decided to tell the story exactly as it happened. There was no point in hiding it anymore. A lie might buy them a few hours, but the truth was already out. It was better Greg heard it from him.
By the time Jared finished, Greg’s face had turned a ghastly shade of white. "So... it is true," he whispered, his voice trembling. "Sebastian really is dying."
Jared looked down, his voice thick with frustration. "We do not know for sure. Lilian spent hours working on him last night and said she managed to suppress the toxin for now. Beyond that, we are in the dark. All we can do is wait for news."
The bedroom fell into a suffocating silence. No one spoke for a long time.
Finally, Greg let out a ragged, agonizing sob. "This is my fault. All of it. If I had not given Renee hope all those years ago, she never would have developed such a sick obsession with Derrick. This never would have happened. It is my sin. My own sin has come back to haunt us." The old man began to weep uncontrollably.
Jared swallowed back his own grief and tried to comfort him. "Dad, stop. No one wanted this to happen. We had no way of knowing that woman was this insane. She spent decades planning this. She even turned her own niece into a pawn. She had Triny’s face surgically altered to look exactly like Lilian just to get close to him. It is beyond anything we could have imagined. Do not blame yourself for her madness."
