At the hospital.
In a daze, Evangeline felt a warmth on her arm, as if someone was holding her hand.
Her mind was still fuzzy as she groggily opened her eyes, only to find herself staring at Finn, who was already awake in the hospital bed.
“You’re awake?” Finn asked softly. His gaze fell to the bandage wrapped around her arm, a flicker of pain in his eyes. “Does it hurt?”
Evangeline met his gentle, apologetic gaze and found herself at a loss for words.
He was the one who was injured, yet here he was, worried about her.
“Finn,” she said.
“Hmm?”
“I’m sorry.”
Evangeline looked at his hospital gown. His face was still pale, marked with obvious scrapes and swelling, and his body was frail from the severe injuries.
He had been hurt so badly, and yet he was asking if she was in pain.
Finn paused, then asked, “Did you fall in love with someone else?”
Evangeline was taken aback by the question, her mind struggling to catch up.
Then she heard Finn continue, “I’m your boyfriend, and you’re with me now. Unless you’ve left me for another man, there’s nothing you need to apologize for.”
Finn gently cupped her face, his eyes meeting hers.
Evangeline’s lips parted. “You were so badly injured…”
You almost died.
Somehow, Evangeline couldn't bring herself to say the last words.
The state Finn had been in yesterday still haunted her. She didn't want to say the word “death,” couldn’t even bear to think it.
But Finn seemed to read her mind.
He smiled. “It’s just a minor injury. I’m actually happy and grateful for these wounds.”
