Bonick's expression changed. "What did she say?" Winston asked immediately.
"She said she's judging an assessment at the Royal Art Academy tomorrow. She won't be able to come to the lab until the day after," Bonick muttered.
"A judge? Or a professor?" Angela's voice rose. "Professor, she's Mr. X's apprentice! The dean over there is definitely trying to poach her! You need to do something!"
Bonick paced frantically around the lab before skidding to a halt. "I'm heading to their campus tomorrow! No one is stealing my star student!"
...
Later that evening, Loyce was staying over at Dennis's place. They had just settled on the couch to watch TV when Dennis's phone blew up with notifications. Finally, he just cast a video call directly onto the television screen.
"The professors from the music department saw the analysis of the ancient score I posted in our group chat," Dennis explained. "They're practically vibrating with excitement. They want to meet you and get some answers."
Loyce nodded. "No problem. I enjoy a good academic debate."
Dennis accepted the call, maximizing it to full screen.
Instantly, seven or eight excited faces crowded the display. They were all over forty—the very professors and department heads known for being the most rigorous, even pedantic, academics in the entire institution.
"Dennis! Where is the analyst? Let us see her!" shouted Professor Henry, the gray-haired authority on music history, pushing his thick glasses up his nose.
"My God, that structural deduction and the reconstruction of the ritual logic—it's the perfect key for that ancient score!" Another woman, Eirene, who specialized in ancient notation, sounded breathless.
Dennis stroked his chin smugly, looking like a kid showing off a shiny new toy. He leaned back, revealing Loyce sitting next to him on the sofa. "Look at you all, frothing at the mouth! Allow me to officially introduce my honorary granddaughter, and the brilliant mind who solved our little puzzle—Loyce. You might recognize her from the Steinway competition in Harmony Country."
