When Loyce woke up, she was lying in a comfortable bed, stripped of her wet clothes, with a space heater blowing warm air beside her.
At the edge of the bed, Storm and Nightingale were hunched over her ruined tactical suit.
"The hidden camera is completely smashed," Storm muttered.
"Can you salvage it? The internal chip looks pretty chewed up too," Nightingale replied.
Storm adjusted his grip on his tools, squinting at the fragile circuitry. "It might be recoverable, but who knows how much footage we can actually pull off it."
A weak voice broke the silence. "How is Lucian?"
Both of them snapped their heads up. Seeing she was awake, they dropped the gear and rushed over. Storm reached the bed first. "Boss, you're awake! Lucian's alive, but he's still in the OR."
"The OR?"
Storm nodded. "When the enemy couldn't find his body, they flooded the grid with patrols. The merchant ship we boarded got boarded by them too. To avoid a shootout and getting caught, we changed course. We had the captain dock in Mexistar instead."
Nightingale chimed in. "His leg is in bad shape. The medics evaluated him and said it couldn't wait, but the ship doesn't have the surgical setup for it. Since we have major clients in Mexistar, it was easier to pull strings here. We decided to dock, get him into a private hospital, and figure out how to get back to Harmony Country later."
Loyce let out a breath. "You made the right call." She glanced at the shredded tactical suit on the table. "Can you still extract the data?"
Her combat suit was custom-made, equipped with micro-cameras that recorded everything she saw. If the footage was salvageable, it would have hard proof of the enemy's attempt to brutally execute Lucian.
"I'm not sure. The damage is severe. I need time," Storm said.
Nightingale frowned, confused. "Weren't you supposed to evac with the Stellar Trust mercs? Why did you come out of the underwater caves?"
