By the time Vincent arrived at the hospital, Mrs. Walker was long gone.
April had been taken into delivery room, but the baby had not yet been born.
"Doctor, how is my wife?" Vincent asked, grabbing a doctor's arm. He had always presented April as his wife to outsiders, so no one had questioned their relationship. But now that Mrs. Walker had made a scene revealing April as the mistress, his use of the phrase 'my wife' sounded rather absurd.
Even the way the doctor looked at Vincent held a strange, unspoken judgment.
"The mother suffered severe distress, which induced labor prematurely. However, the baby is full-term and the fetal heart rate is normal, so there shouldn't be any major problems," the doctor explained.
After all, April had a background as a police detective, and she was in much better physical shape than the average woman. That's why, even after being beaten and kicked by Mrs. Walker, she had managed to protect the baby.
Hearing this, Vincent felt a wave of relief wash over him. "When do you think the baby will be born?" he asked.
"Labor varies from woman to woman; it can be long or short, so it's hard to say. However, the mother is of advanced maternal age. If she hasn't delivered by tonight, we'll opt for a Cesarean section for safety," the doctor added.
Vincent nodded in understanding, but he couldn't help but worry. April was the woman he loved, and the child in her womb was the one he had been longing for.
Vincent didn't leave the hospital. He waited all through the evening until finally, April gave birth. It was a natural delivery, and she had a healthy boy weighing seven pounds and eleven ounces. Both mother and child were safe.
A nurse brought the baby out and handed him to Vincent.
"It's a boy, seven pounds and eleven ounces. Congratulations."
Vincent took the baby with extreme care. At an age when most men were becoming grandfathers, he finally had a son of his own.
The baby was red and wrinkly, looking a little funny, but Vincent was so overjoyed he almost shouted for joy.
A short while later, April was brought back to her room.
