"I don't know, let's eat it first and find out. How will I know if it makes me feel sick if I don't eat it?" Yvonne looked up at him, a smile on her face.
Bennett and Yvonne walked into Mrs. Powell's office.
Mrs. Powell took the ultrasound report, glanced it over, and smiled. "The mother and baby are both very healthy. You can rest assured."
"Thank you for your hard work, Mrs. Powell," Yvonne said politely with a smile.
Bennett stood behind her, his gaze on Mrs. Powell dark and intimidating.
His presence was so intense that Mrs. Powell's heart fluttered uncontrollably.
"A child is only truly safe once it's born. Mrs. Powell, you're a top obstetrician. I'm entrusting my wife and child to you, and I expect you to guarantee their safety," Bennett said, his voice low.
"Don't worry, I'll do my best," Mrs. Powell promised.
"I don't want your best effort. I want a guarantee," Bennett retorted, then took Yvonne's hand and led her out.
Yvonne was pulled along, passively following him out of the office and down the hospital corridor.
"Bennett, why were you so harsh with Mrs. Powell? She's actually a nice person," Yvonne said as they walked.
Hearing this, Bennett stopped, turned to her, and let out a cold sneer. "A nice person who accepts bribes?"
Yvonne stood before him and sighed in exasperation. "It was wrong for Mrs. Powell to take bribes, but she's seen the error of her ways, hasn't she?"
"She hasn't seen the error of her ways. She's just not a complete idiot and knows how to weigh her options," Bennett said coldly.
"Okay, okay, you're right." Yvonne didn't argue, just nodded in agreement. "But, you know, to err is human. As police officers, we're supposed to give people who've made mistakes a chance to start over."
"Vonnie, you're not a police officer anymore..."
