Isabelle felt that simply knowing he existed was enough to fulfill that part of her heart.
Having lived over twenty years without him, his presence wasn't a necessity anymore.
Finley didn't step closer. Instead, he opened his phone, pulled up a photo, and showed it to Isabelle.
It was a paternity test result.
When they met at Mountain Roots Estate, Finley had taken a strand of her hair and had the test done.
Isabelle hadn't been prepared for this.
Caroline didn't want Isabelle to acknowledge him.
Isabelle also didn't want to cause Caroline distress over him.
I was careless.
"So?" she said.
Finley smiled, "Isabelle, seeing you doing well makes me happy."
"Finished?" she asked.
"Isabelle, I hope you won't hold such hostility toward me. I'm your father. You can come to me if you need anything," Finley said.
Isabelle smiled, "I do need a favor from you."
Finley seemed relieved.
Isabelle added, "I need you to not interfere in my and my mother's lives. Thank you."
With that, she moved to walk past him.
Finley grabbed her wrist.
She reflexively yanked her hand back.
They stared at each other.
Finley said, "At the very least, I am your biological father. It's fine if you don't accept me now. I'll work on bringing you both back into my life. You don't know how long I've searched for you all these years. I truly..."
Isabelle knew he wouldn't give up.
From what Caroline had said, it was clear that Finley wasn't reliable.
That alone made Isabelle want nothing to do with him.
"Mr. Debose," Isabelle cut off his rambling explanation. "If Ashley knew about our relationship, and that I'm now married to her ex-boyfriend, how do you think your daughter—the one you raised—would feel?
"We did just fine without you before. We'll do even better going forward. Do you really think we'd spend time accepting a new person into our lives now? Would your other daughter agree? You weren't there over twenty years ago. I just consider it my mom borrowing some genetic material. Don't trouble yourself over it. After all, you only contributed three seconds. Nothing else was ever your burden."
Isabelle didn't want to outright explode; she was already doing a good job suppressing her anger.
Searched for years?
Isabelle found Finley within a year of returning to the country.
With his resources, two years would have been more than enough, let alone over twenty.
He didn't find them because he didn't want to.
