A soft groan escaped her. The sharp pain in her shoulder made it impossible to sit upright, forcing her to slump against the chair. Her head throbbed.
Did Collin pick up the video call? My phone fell from the stairs when he dragged me down. Who knows where it landed?
“Just stick to the plan and get the money. Don’t touch her, no matter how pretty she is,” the one who drove said.
“You guys are scared, but I’m not. Haven’t had my fun yet,” said an older teenager, Ramon Vega. He wiped his nose while eating takeout.
Isabelle looked at him.
He must be barely legal.
“Maybe we shouldn’t go that far. It’s Christmas. The client said to ruin her hands, so let’s just do that. Anything else is too much,” another boy said, not arguing outright but trying to dissuade him.
Ramon said, “The client said to ruin her hands. They didn’t say we couldn’t touch her. They left it up to us.”
Isabelle listened to their talk while carefully working on the ropes behind her back. The knots were tight and painfully dug into her skin.
A cold sweat broke out on her forehead, tears welling in her eyes as she tried to figure out their goal.
These three want to cripple my hands.
My hands are for design. If they’re ruined, my career is over.
Who would want something this cruel, targeting my hands for revenge?
Two names came to mind. The first was Ashley. It was obvious–they were both designers. Their hands were their livelihood.
The second was Gary. All his suffering this year stemmed from Isabelle, but in the end, he’d brought it on himself.
Actually, there was a third face in her mind–Celeste.
According to Collin, she was not a good person. If she could hurt herself badly enough to land in the hospital, she was capable of anything.
Isabelle pushed the thought aside. The most important thing now was to get out of here.
She kept trying to loosen the ropes.
By the time they finished eating, she still hadn’t succeeded. Her wrists were now raw and marked with red welts. The more she struggled, the worse the pain got.
Ramon walked over, a toothpick dangling from his mouth, worn slippers on his feet.
Isabelle’s eyes widened. She tried to lean back but had nowhere to go.
He yanked the scarf from her mouth without mercy. Her lips felt sore and stretched from being gagged for so long.

Combined with the dryness, it sent her into a fit of dry coughs. She hung her head, relieving the tension in her jaw.

Then, Ramon’s hand clamped around her chin, his grip distorting the pale skin and leaving red marks. It felt like he meant to snap it.
“Hurts,” Isabelle managed to squeeze out.
A tear escaped the corner of her eye, tracing a path to her shoulder.
“Good. It’s supposed to,” Ramon said, shifting the toothpick to the other side of his mouth.
He tilted his head, looking her over.
The other two teenagers hung back, frowning but not intervening. They didn’t do this often, and they were sweating even in this winter cold.
Ramon gave her chin a rough shove, releasing her and taking two steps back. A smirk played on his lips, his brows lifted with a twisted kind of delight.
Isabelle felt like her neck nearly snapped. She could barely move it.
“Get ready to take pictures,” Ramon said, tilting his head and spitting out the toothpick. He ran his tongue over his lips, looking far too pleased with himself.
“Do we really have to do this?” asked the lankier boy on the left, eyeing Isabelle with growing hesitation.
“Damn it. How else do we make it believable?” Ramon rolled his eyes and slapped the back of the younger boy’s head.
The boy stumbled forward, hunching his shoulders, not daring to look up. Trembling, he started to comply.
