Isabelle and Helena exchanged a quiet, amused glance.

He muttered something under his breath, his eyes scanning the crowd. “Where’s that son of mine, anyway?”
“He’s still inside working the room.” Isabelle said, nodding toward Damian and Brian, who stood conversing not far away.
Damian held a glass of red wine, engaged in conversation with two senior executives, taking an occasional, measured sip.
A private smile touched Isabelle’s lips. Her man had his own brand of magnetism–though this was perhaps the first time she’d seen Damian apply such focused intensity to a business setting.
“Tch, this corporate grind. I told him to walk away from it, but does he listen? There’s a whole business back home with nobody properly at the helm,” Frank grumbled, his gaze settling on Brian with a mix of pride and exasperation.
Even as an assistant, after shadowing Damian for so long, Brian had absorbed a certain executive poise–it was unmistakable.
Frank did a slight double–take. Was this poised, polished man really his easygoing, perpetually relaxed son?
Dressed in a sharp suit, he almost passed for a hotshot CEO himself.
Isabelle only knew his family owned a thoroughbred horse ranch–she’d never grasped the full scale of their operations.
The first time she’d met Frank, he’d been wearing mud–splattered boots, holding a crop, dressed in worn jeans and a faded plaid shirt under a well–used rancher’s hat.

It wasn’t hard to understand why Brian hadn’t been in a rush to go back and take over.
“Belie, I’m going to head home–he’s getting tired,” Helena whispered from beside her.
She was, of course, referring to the baby she was carrying.
Just then, her driver
at a respectful distance.
“Take care on the road, Isabelle said softly.

“Will do,” Helena replied, then offered Frank a parting nod.
Frank smiled warmly. “You drive safe now, young lady.”

As Helena departed. Damian and Brian concluded their discussion. Both men looked toward Isabelle and Frank.
“Frank, you’re not here to drag him back to the ranch, are you?” Isabelle teased lightly.
Frank watched his son walking toward him with a new, purposeful stride.
That kid… He’d grown up. Matured considerably. There was a settled, confident steadiness in his bearing now.
“Drag him back? Fat chance,” Frank said, knowing his son’s independent streak all too well. “That man next to him–that’s his boss?”
“Yes, Brian’s boss,” Isabelle confirmed, then added with a hint of pride. “And also my husband.”
“Fine–looking man. Brian’s lucky to learn from someone like that–must have done something right in a past life.” Frank nodded approvingly. Suddenly, he glanced back at Isabelle, her last words finally registering. “Your husband?”
Isabelle’s smile widened. “That’s right.”
“Mr. Hughes.” Damian extended his hand, and the two men shook firmly.
Damian’s eyes then found Isabelle’s, a silent question in them. You know him?
Isabelle simply smiled, letting the moment breathe.
Brian made the formal introduction. “My boss, Damian Cross of Cypher Group.”
“Impressive, truly impressive for a man your age!” Frank praised heartily, then redirected his pointed gaze to Brian. “And you?”
He wasn’t asking about Brian’s title–he was turning the tables. This man’s running a major corporation, and you’re still out here instead of stepping up at home? Wouldn’t kill you to be the one in charge–think of the b
rights for the family!
Brian offered an awkward, placating
grin. “Come on, Dad, give me a break here…”
Damian’s brow furrowed slightly. Dad?

“Your father?” he asked, genuine surprise in his tone.
Brian laughed, a touch sheepishly. “The one and only. Biological and everything.”
Yep, the formidable man before them was his old man.
Damian let out a low, self–deprecating chuckle.
What were the odds?
Soon after. Damian and Frank excused themselves to a quieter lounge area to discuss business matters.

Isabelle and Brian remained outside, settling into a pair of comfortable wicker chairs on the terrace, listening to the faint strains of music from inside while sampling desserts from a passing tray.
“Mr. Hughes, you really kept that under wraps, didn’t you? Even I was in the dark!” Isabelle raised her glass of sparkling water in a light toast toward him.
Brian leaned back in his chair and took a casual sip. “Wasn’t a secret. My family really is in the horse business.”

The ranch was merely the most visible, down–to–earth part of the empire.
The Hughes family operated with intentional low profile. They lived on the main ranch property in the valley, and Frank rarely attended formal industry events–his philosophy leaned toward live simply, stay out of the spotlight, and only leave the ranch when absolutely
