Damian patted Frank on the shoulder. “Barry’s got roots down South, knows his barbecue and grits inside out. How about we try some Southern–style flavors?”
Frank’s face brightened. “Now that’s an idea! My kitchen crew could definitely pick up a few tricks.”
After sharing a few more laughs, Damian and Frank followed the stable hand toward the back paddocks.
Brian and Diana happened to step out to join them at that moment.
Brian went off with Damian, while Diana made her way over to Isabelle.
“Did Ms. Snow pack any riding gear? Feel like joining us for a trail ride?” Isabelle asked with a friendly smile.
Celeste let out an awkward chuckle. “No, thank you. My legs aren’t what they used to be. You all enjoy yourselves.”
It was only then that it dawned on Celeste–the invitation to the ranch probably wasn’t just a simple social call.
Celeste didn’t know how to ride. With Barry handling Frank’s responsibilities, Damian got a clear shot to talk business with Frank privately. A horseback ride was also the perfect excuse to leave Celeste behind, smoothly edging her out of the picture entirely.
A bitter smile touched her lips.
She had spun a pretty wide web, only to find herself tangled right in the middle of it.
“Alright, no problem,” Isabelle said, not pressing the matter.
Diana moved closer to Isabelle then, looping her arm through hers. “When did you make it over?”
Isabelle’s eyes flickered to the faint mark on Diana’s collarbone. Hiding a smile, she leaned in and whispered, “Right around the time you were getting picky with your horse.”
Diana quickly rugged her along, following the path Damian and the others had taken. “You
noticed?”
“Put the pieces together just now,” Isabelle replied, her grin widening

Those two were like a match to kerosene–probably hadn’t been a thing for very long.
Brian seemed young, but who would’ve guessed he had game when it came to romance.
“You gotta keep this under wraps, okay? We’re not putting any labels on it,” Diana/murmured, softly.
“What’s not to like about Brian? So he’s a year or two younger–he’s got his head on straight. And have you seen the way he fills out a shirt?” Isabelle couldn’t help but talk him up.
When Brian first started working for Damian, he was all skinny arms and no stamina. Damian had him hitting the gym hard for months, turning that lanky frame into something solid and toned. Pair that with his decent looks and height, and Brian was definitely a catch.
Diana was aware Brian was in good shape–she just had zero interest in the whole marriage idea. She got nervous even thinking about serious relationships. What they had going on was, at most, having someone around when the nights felt too quiet.
Brian knew where she stood, and it didn’t seem to bother him.
Isabelle got Diana’s hesitation, but Brian wasn’t Damian. Brian had his own methods for getting under someone’s skin.
“Just let it be, alright?” Diana mumbled, looking away.
Isabelle didn’t push any further.
By the time they arrived at the riding ring, Damian and Frank were already up in their saddles.
Isabelle, naturally, was an experienced rider. She came out to the ranch every year to ride. Frank had once sort of hoped she’d be family, but somehow they’d ended up just good friends instead.
“I’ll leave you to it. Take your time getting the hang of things,” Isabelle said, shooting a knowing, almost mischievous look toward Brian, who was waiting patiently nearby.
Taking the reins from the instructor, Isabelle swung herself up into the saddle with ease and guided her horse away, leaving the… charged atmosphere behind.
“Yeah, yeah, get going.” Diana said, shooing her off with a pretend–annoyed wave.

Diana had never ridden before, but Brian had already picked out a gentle horse for her.
“All set, Ms. Williams?” Brian asked, a charming, slightly lopsided smirk on his face.
“A grin like that back in the day would’ve gotten you pelted with tomatoes.”
“Something tells me you wouldn’t stand for that,” Brian said, holding the reins steady as he closed the distance between them. “Come on, darling.”
Brian gave her the basics–how to mount, the difference between holding the reins one way or two, and then hopped on to show her himself.
After dismounting, he let Diana take a turn.
Diana was a natural. She got up into the saddle in one smooth motion and held the reins just right.
“Once you’re settled, squeeze with your thighs, not your calves. Otherwise you’ll be sore tomorrow,” Brian instructed, his voice dropping to a lower register as he gave her thigh a firm, guiding pat.
Diana felt a flutter of embarrassment, her eyes dropping to where his hand had been. Her skin tingled where he’d touched her.
“Need a clearer picture?” Brian chuckled softly. “Think about the other night, but ease up a little…”
Diana’s face burned.
Their time together was strictly an after–dark thing. In the darkness, words flowed freely, but she never let him stay over. Once they were done, she’d usher him out. During daylight hours, they’d never had a moment quite like this–him standing there, giving instructions in that calm, steady tone.
Diana swallowed thickly.
Brian adjusted her foot in the stirrup. “Just the ball of your foot. To get him going, a little nudge with your heel.”
Diana understood the theory perfectly, but her nerves held her back.
“Want me to lead him for you?” Brian looked up at her, his eyes meeting hers.
