Damian glanced at Sophia, then let his eyes drift toward Isabelle, who was casually enjoying her des not too far away.

She looked pretty unbothered, acting like nothing had happened at all.

Seemed like she hadn’t been pushed around, which was a relief.

Sophia was far out of her league; she never stood a chance against Isabelle.

“Why is nobody talking to me?” Sophia complained.

Not that she cared–these two had always been kind of distant with her anyway.

Damian ignored what she said and replied firmly, “Her name is Isabelle.”

“She’s not even as pretty as Ash—”

Before Sophia could finish, Jonathan grabbed her by the arm and pulled her aside.

“If you don’t know how to talk, then don’t talk. No one thinks you’re mute!”

As Jonathan dragged her off, Damian slid his hands into his pockets/his cool stare fixed on her face. unreadable.

Ashley and Sophia had gone to the same school–one was a senior, the other a junior. They’d met throug Damian back in the day and had gotten along pretty well.

And now she’d brought that up in a setting like this.

Damian shot her a sharp look before turning to go find his wife.

“Jonathan! Why are you pulling me?” Sophia protested, refusing to let it go. “What did I even say wrong this time?”

“What are you trying to pull?” Jonathan pushed her into a quiet corner.

Sophia caught her balance and straightened her clothes, which he’d messed up.

The air between them went cold.

Jonathan had never really bothered with Sophia’s drama before–couldn’t be bothered.

“I’m not trying to pull anything. I’m just telling it like it is. What, we can’t talk about how Isabelle got w she is?” Sophia still had that arrogant, rude look on her face.

“How can someone your age say things like that?” Jonathan frowned.

She was embarrassing the whole Tucker family.

“Isn’t it true?”

“No, it’s not!” Jonathan snapped, hands on his hips.

If their parents couldn’t handle her and he didn’t step in, she’d think she could do whatever she wanted

Sophia was caught off guard by his tone. Since they were kids, Jonathan had rarely goften involved in h business–as long as she didn’t embarrass him, he usually stayed out of it.

But when he did step in, it never ended well.

“Sophia, do you ever think before you speak?” Jonathan couldn’t hold back. “All that money spent on you education, and it’s like it just went in one ear and out the other! Even our late grandma had more sense than you!”

“Jonathan! You’re yelling at me over someone who isn’t even real family? You’re the one who’s lost it!” Sophia didn’t take in a word–it only made her angrier.

“I’m just calling it like I see it. I stand by what’s right, not by blood. Besides, the Cross family is family to me too. You’d better show some respect, or don’t blame me for what happens when we get home!”

“Jonathan! I’m your sister!”

“Exactly why I’m stepping in. Otherwise, I would’ve slapped you into next week already!”

Jonathan had never come down on her this hard before.

He hardly ever got involved in family drama, and their parents trusted him completely.

Whenever Jonathan spoke up at home, Sophia lost her chance to say anything.

The Tuckers had always been pretty soft on Sophia, but Jonathan held real sway at home. He was smart, steady, clear–headed–his words carried weight.

Sophia’s eyes went red.

Even her parents had never scolded her like this. Jonathan had actually made her cry.

Jonathan didn’t let up. His tone stayed hard as he went on, “And don’t even think about making a play for Grandpa’s estate, or I’ll have Mom and Dad ship you overseas!”

“Why! Why does Isabelle get everything handed to her without lifting a finger!” Before she finished, tears were rolling down her cheeks.
