Damian gently helped her into a chair, served a plate for her, and listened as she began.

“Collin’s mother was a teacher to both Diana and me. She has late–stage cancer and doesn’t have much time left. Collin asked if Diana and I could visit her occasionally, and I agreed.” Her voice grew quieter toward the end, a hint of worry that he might be displeased.

“Your mom mentioned she and my mom were close friends too, right?” Damian’s expression remained neutral, betraying neither approval nor disapproval.

“Yes.” Isabelle studied his face carefully.

He placed some food on her plate and said casually, “Spending time with his mother is fine. But if you’re spending time with him, I won’t be happy–and I can get pretty moody.”

Isabelle smiled. Why did he have to make even his jealousy sound so endearing?

“He saved me that one time, and I never properly thanked him. Consider this me returning the favor.”

Damian understood, of course. He wasn’t unreasonable, but he couldn’t afford to be careless

either.

From the very beginning, the way Collin looked at Isabelle had never sat right with him.

Damian thought to himself that if he hadn’t married Isabelle when he did, Collin might very well have ended up with her.

Collin was an accomplished man.

There weren’t many women who wouldn’t be drawn to someone with his charm and polished demeanor.

But men like that were often difficult to read, their true motives carefully concealed beneath a pleasant surface.

“Just let me know when you plan to go,” he finally said.

“Okay.” Isabelle was well aware of Damian’s dislike for Collin.

Back when she had chosen not to tell Collin about her marriage to Damian, it had undoubtedly given him the wrong impression.

Collin likely believed Isabelle didn’t truly love Damian–why else keep the marriage a secret?– and that belief probably fueled his determination..

His approach had always been somewhat restrained, but that very restraint now seemed to be pushing Isabelle further away.

Why had she kept the marriage hidden in the first place?

She had married a man she barely knew and had no idea how long it would last. If it became public knowledge and they divorced later, she’d feel exposed and humiliated.

And Damian had always indulged her, letting her set the pace.

“Your cooking keeps getting better,” Isabelle remarked, genuinely enjoying the meal.

Damian chuckled softly.

“What’s so funny?” she asked.

“Nothing.”

The last time she had praised his cooking, she had said he had “good skills“.

This time, she had notably avoided that particular phrasing.

Isabelle pouted slightly, unable to decipher the thoughts behind this man’s enigmatic smile.

“Didn’t you say you’re going abroad at the end of the month? Have you finalized the dates?” Isabelle served him some food in return.

“I’ll leave after Sienna and Blaze’s wedding,” Damian said, looking up.

Blaze had, after all, once pursued Isabelle. Damian wanted to see that man safely married off before he could feel at ease. Besides, they’d received invitations–it would be rude not to attend.

More pressingly, Collin had also been invited. Damian wasn’t entirely sure how Blaze and Collin knew each other.

If Collin was going to be there, Damian absolutely had to attend as well.

“The timeline might shift a bit. I could be away longer than initially planned,” he added.

A flicker of sadness passed through Isabelle. They had never been apart for that long before.

“How much longer?”

“A month at most.” Damian reached out and gently pinched her cheek. “I’ll do everything I can to cut it short.”

“That’s such a long time…” she mumbled, her unhappiness evident.

Even before his departure, she was already feeling the ache of his absence, already reluctant to let him go.

She wasn’t sure why, but her eyes grew misty.

Damian set down his fork and cradled her face in his hands. “Hey now, are those tears?”

“No, they’re not.” Isabelle pulled his hands away, but the warmth of his touch lingered.

“We’ve been talking about taking our wedding photos forever and still haven’t done it. When I get back, no matter how busy things are, that’s our first priority, okay?” Damian felt a pang of his own reluctance.

He truly wanted to take her with him, but she had her own career and commitments. Furthermore, there were matters he needed to handle that he couldn’t involve her in just yet.

He had to be resolute.

“Okay…” Isabelle’s heart clenched with a bittersweet ache.
