Lawler just couldn’t wrap his head around how sure of herself Claire seemed.
He fixed his gaze on her. “Alright, then please take the needles out.”
Claire checked the time and calmly removed the golden needles one by one.
Before she started, Lawler pulled out his phone and snapped a few photos himself. If anything went wrong with the patient, he planned to call in the hospital’s top experts to weigh in. If the family tried to blame the hospital, he’d have proof that it wasn’t their fault. In his mind, it would be on the family for trusting traditional medicine.
Claire noticed Lawler’s actions but didn’t try to stop him.
Jennifer, though, felt a pang of guilt on Claire’s behalf. Pandora was watching everything unfold. If Jennifer didn’t stand up for Claire, not only would she have to answer to Pandora, but when her father woke up, he’d definitely hold her responsible too.
Chrystal was well aware of how much Pandora’s opinion mattered, but she was even more worried about her dad. She’d never actually seen Claire’s skills in action, so deep down, she was more inclined to trust Lawler.
“Dr. Lawler, we’re counting on you now,” she said quietly.
Lawler didn’t respond. He just signaled the nurses to wheel the patient off for tests and followed after them, his irritation clear as day.
Chrystal’s anxiety was written all over her face. What if the doctor she’d just offended decided to take it out on her father?
Jennifer saw what Chrystal was thinking and tried to reassure her. “Don’t worry so much, Chrystal. Lawler trained under a famous doctor. No matter what, he’ll do his job. Besides, we should put our faith in Claire too.”
Chrystal just murmured a vague agreement, still looking troubled.
Honestly, Pandora was only sticking around for Daniel’s sake. If it weren’t for him, she would’ve taken Claire and left ages ago. If the family trusted the hospital’s doctors more, why let Claire stand there and take the blame?
“Pandora, please don’t be upset. I trust Claire,” Jennifer said in a rush. “If it weren’t for her, I don’t even know if Dad would’ve made it to the hospital at all.”
She wasn’t just praising Claire. She was also gently reminding Chrystal—if she sided with Lawler, wasn’t she dismissing all the effort Claire had put in to save their father?
Chrystal finally got the hint. “You’re right, Jennifer. Claire really did a lot to make sure Dad got here safely.”
